Position Overview
| Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The NCCU Department of Athletics’ primary purpose is to provide leadership for an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program. The NCCU Department of Athletics places the highest priority on a quality academic and athletic experience as part of the overall education of student-athletes. The Department of Athletics seeks to strengthen the integration of the athletics program objectives with academic development objectives.

| Primary Purpose of Position |
Serves as institutional representative to the media for all athletic activities. Plans, organizes, and coordinates media relations activities; writes and distributes newsletters, brochures, and reports to television and radio stations, newspapers, and magazines; responds to various requests for team histories, photos, statistics, and related information.

| Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
Sports information experience at the Division I NCAA level or conference level.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences. Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions. Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements. Ability to coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Employee development and performance management skills. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Media relations skills. Knowledge of sporting press box procedures, techniques, facilities and equipment.

| Minimum Education/Experience |
Bachelor’s degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Member of the Department of Athletics Senior Administrative Staff. Meets with Director of Athletics weekly (or as needed) to provide updates on strategic communications/sports information, as well as feedback on any administrative issues. Responds to requests from the Director of Athletics or fellow senior staff members regarding strategic communications/sports information topics.

Oversees production of video and audio broadcasts on the NCCU Sports Network. Coordinates with television crews for live game broadcasts, including conference partnership with ESPN. Conducts media training with designated student-athletes and coaches. Meets with teams (as scheduled) to review policies regarding strategic communications/sports information.

Oversees all aspects of NCCU Athletics Strategic Communications / Sports Information office. Supervises staff of three full-time assistants, one graduate/volunteer assistant, and student interns (1-3 interns per semester). Manages strategic communications/sports information budget, including approval of spending and submission of necessary paperwork to the athletics business office. Produces annual review of strategic communications/sports information office to use as an evaluation tool of the work produced by the office staff.

Establishes and enforces procedures regarding office operations and conduct of staff, as well as media interactions with student-athletes, coaches and staff. Educates strategic communications/sports information staff about strategic communications and brand management. Reviews and edits Department of Athletics printed materials intended for public viewing. Orchestrates social media strategy for the official department accounts, including oversight of team-specific accounts.

Serves as sport administrator for various sports. Provides general administrative oversight for designated sport programs. Reviews and approves administrative materials (budget, travel, compliance, etc.). Serves as an administrative liaison to coaches and student-athletes for designated sport programs. Conducts annual program reviews and head coach evaluations.

Serves as primary sports information contact for various sports. Writes press releases, game recaps and other content for distribution to media outlets, alumni, fans, campus community, etc., using Associated Press style. Posts updates on official athletics website and social media. Maintains quick facts, schedules and rosters for distribution to conference office and opponents. Designs publications using desktop publishing software (Adobe InDesign). Edits digital images and creates digital graphics using photo editing software (Adobe Photoshop).

Coordinates media interviews with student-athletes and coaches. Produces game notes for distribution to media in coverage of a specific event. Records statistical data during home games using StatCrew/TAS or Genius Live Stats software. Oversees media operations at home athletics events. Responds to needs of media, fellow sports information professionals, the conference office and the NCAA. Maintains historical records for archives.
