Director, Basketball Equipment Operations

Position Summary

The Director of Basketball Equipment Operations is responsible for managing the day-to-day operation and supervising the equipment operations of both basketball programs. This position will be under the general supervision of the Associate Athletics Director, Equipment Operations working specifically with both programs that includes approximately 30 student-athletes and a combination of 30 coaches and support staff members. Successful candidate will be responsible for being hands-on in the equipment room operations, including supervising two full-time employees and student managers, monitoring, and distribution of all equipment and apparel for the UCLA basketball programs. The individual will be responsible for managing the relationship with the Jumpman and Wilson Brands, fulfilling all contractual obligations. Other duties include collaborating with the Associate Athletics Director when as it pertains to inventory tracking, locker room maintenance, facility upkeep, ensuring the safety of team issued gear and practice and training items, as well as oversight of staff issued apparel. Position will serve as a primary contact for both programs facilitating team needs for both home and road contests, preparing uniforms and necessary apparel for all athletic contests – both at home and on the road, and potentially off-site practice locations. Duties will also include recruiting student managers, assisting with recruiting events and camp operational needs, and daily laundry services to meet team needs.

Qualifications

• Two-five years of experience working in the Athletic Equipment, specifically in a basketball equipment room. (Required)
  • Ability to work independently and with follow through on assignments with minimal direction; Demonstrated execution of prioritization of assignments in a timely fashion in fast paced environment. (Required)
  • Understanding and demonstrated compliance with Departmental, University, Big Ten and NCAA rules and regulations (Required)
  • Strong knowledge of equipment and apparel maintenance and repair techniques in accordance to manufacturer specifications and the NCAA. (Required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship and effective communication with other staff members, students, and administrators and University personnel and public; Skill in organizing material, people and information in a systematic way to optimize efficiency. (Required)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) as well as being a relationship builder across many organization levels on campus, and externally; Writing skills to prepare forms, reports and correspondence with speed and accuracy. (Required)

  • Experience with staff supervision, Human Resources practices, confidentiality, organizational direction workflow, delegation, train programs and work evaluation; Must be able to speak on a one-on-one basis or in small group settings to convey and obtain relevant information. (Required)
  • Ability to operate a computer with experience in Microsoft Office, Outlook and Windows. (Required)
  • Understanding and acceptance of organizational goals and collaboratively and cooperatively working as a team member to support those goals and objectives. (Required)
  • Ability to perform effectively in dynamic work environment at odd hours and conditions at times. (Required)
  • Understanding of budgets and budget management to prepare, maintain and close annual budgets, including ability to follow department and University general accounting and procurement guidelines. (Required)
  • Skill in implementing and monitoring a quality control and inventory program sufficient to meet established specifications of the job. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of methods, tools, equipment and material of the trade sufficient to organize work, evaluate progress and ensure work assignments meet stated standards. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

• Bachelor’s degree. (Preferred)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
  • Certification from the Athletic Equipment Manager’s Association (AEMA) possessed or obtained within one year of hire. (Required)

Special Conditions for Employment

• Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
  • CANRA: The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA. The employee must sign the "Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse".
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, odd hours and holidays as needed. (Required)
