Typical Duties & Responsibilities:
Equestrian Center Management
Implement strategic initiatives for successful equestrian center operations.
Schedule riding classes and provide riding lesson instruction.
Supervise barn management staff.
Consult with veterinarian and farrier to ensure sound horse care.
Enforce and monitor equestrian center policies and procedures.
Effectively manage the Equestrian Center budget.
Develop alumni and parent relations.
Initiate revenue generating programming for the Varsity teams and equestrian center.
Responsible for identifying and evaluating possible horse donations and completing all necessary paperwork in conjunction with General Counsel and University Relations
Make decisions about horse treatment and welfare.
Maintain thorough records of horse usage
Supervise equine specialist to maintain equine treatments and health records.
Invoice horse boarding clientele.
Manage conflicts that arise; parents, team members, coaches, and staff.
Identify and recruit athletes for the IHSA and NCEA programs.
Effectively manage pasture in collaboration with Domain Manager.
Equestrian Coaching
Assist with coaching and mentoring IHSA and NCEA student-athletes.
Assist with arranging travel to shows for horses and student-athletes.
Collaborate with the Head Equestrian Coach to organize and host IHSA and NCEA shows.
Assist with posting daily ride lists.
Machines & Equipment Used:
Farm tractors and utility vehicles
Horse trailers and towing equipment
Mowers and pasture maintenance equipment
Hand and power tools used in barn maintenance
Computers, printers, and office equipment
Equine management software and database systems
Judgment Required:
Performance of the essential duties of this position is dependent upon independent ingenuity and developmental efforts.
Budgetary Responsibility:
Monitors expenditures against budget; prepares budget data for review/approval by supervisor/department head.
Personal Interaction/Communication: - Student Contact: Frequent; assisting visitors, answering questions, resolving problems - Internal: Frequent; assisting visitors, answering questions, resolving problems - External: Periodic; assisting visitors, answering questions, resolving problems; interacting with vendors and contractors; planning and coordinating the travel arrangements for intercollegiate athletic teams
Education:
Bachelor's degree
Experience:
Required
Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in equestrian center management, collegiate equestrian programs, or a related equine environment.
Experience supervising staff and managing daily operations of an equestrian facility.
Experience with horse health management, including coordination with veterinarians and farriers.
Experience developing and managing budgets.
Preferred
Experience within a collegiate equestrian program, including knowledge of IHSA and/or NCEA operations and competition requirements.
Experience with student-athlete recruitment and retention.
Experience with fundraising, donor relations, or revenue-generating programs.
Experience managing horse boarding operations and client relations.
Additional Requirements:
Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and make independent decisions in matters involving equine health and safety, personnel management, and operational priorities.
Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies involving horses, students, staff, or facilities.
Job Related Skills:
Demonstrated knowledge of equine health, welfare, and facility management.
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to manage budgets, develop programming, and foster relationships with students, families, alumni, and donors.
Ability to safely operate farm equipment and manage equestrian facility operations.
Licenses & Certifications:
Required
Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by the University's motor vehicle insurance carrier.
Preferred
First Aid, CPR and equine industry certifications.
