The Director of Applied Nutritional Sciences leads the strategic development and implementation of evidence-based nutritional protocols to optimize football performance, recovery, and long-term athlete development. This position drives innovation in sports nutrition application while managing the integration of sport science initiatives.  The ideal candidate will possess advanced expertise in sport science, sports nutrition, metabolism, and football-specific performance demands, combined with strong leadership capabilities and practical application experience. They will drive the organization's position as a leader in evidence-based football nutrition innovation while delivering measurable performance outcomes through science-backed protocols.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                     

• Spearheads research initiatives to identify cutting-edge nutritional strategies that enhance football-specific performance metrics and recovery protocols
• Directs the development of personalized nutrition programs accounting for position-specific demands, training phases, and individual metabolic profiles
• Oversees body composition analysis, hydration monitoring, and biomarker tracking
• Cultivates partnerships with sport science laboratories and research institutions to advance football-specific nutrition applications
• Mentors’ nutrition staff and educates coaches on the latest advances in performance nutrition
• Translates complex nutritional science into practical fueling strategies for football athletes
• Ensures compliance with NCAA/NFL regulations while innovating within nutritional best practices
• Collaborates with strength & conditioning, sports medicine, and coaching staff to integrate nutrition with comprehensive performance plans
• Develops and manages nutrition protocols across pre-season, in-season, and off-season phases

Education:

Master’s degree or PhD in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions                               

• MS or PhD degree in kinesiology, exercise science, nutrition, exercise physiology, psychology, sports medicine, sport science, or a closely related field, including at least 5 years of relevant experience.
• Experience in biomechanical and/or metabolic assessment protocols and associated device management.
• Experience with sport wearable sensor data collection, management, and insight extraction (e.g., Catapult) and relevant experience in coding for analytics purposes.
• Experience with athletic and performance data structures
• Knowledge of current sports performance research, statistics, and strategies.
• Demonstrated experience in mentorship and educating students in the sport science and sports nutrition field.
• Proven success with contributing to a positive workplace culture, and ability to consistently demonstrate University of Miami Core Values.
