The University of Hartford, at an exciting time as it begins competition at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, seeks an energetic Director of Athletics and Recreation to build upon the institution’s proud athletics history. Assumes responsibility as a divisional leader contributing to strategic planning, organizational change management, equity-minded practices, program innovation, advancement initiatives, and the purposeful holistic development of student-athletes. Oversees intercollegiate sports, recreation, and a robust intramurals program. Promotes the mission of the University and its tradition of competitiveness, integrity, and academic excellence. In all actions, ensures compliance with institutional, Commonwealth Coast Conference, and NCAA standards. Performs all duties in full support of the University’s mission, understanding that the positive and effective execution of these duties are instrumental to the education of the University’s students.
Job Duties

Assumes responsibility for the development, implementation, and oversight of both short- and long- range strategic goals within athletics and recreation, NCAA compliance initiatives, advancement strategies, public relations and communication tactics, and prudent fiscal management for the Department of Athletics and Recreation. Fosters and sustains a culture of transparency, professionalism, integrity, and respect. Guides and mentors staff responsible for recreation activities and the health and welfare of student-athletes, their academic performance, program development, and community outreach.
Collaborates effectively with internal and external constituencies in an effort to create and execute a comprehensive development program that matches funding needs and opportunities with private sector resources. Oversees all athletic and recreation external relations in collaboration with the Office of Marketing and Communication. Actively engages alumni, corporate sponsors, and donors in an effort to help raise funds for the Department of Athletics and Recreation. Consults with the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs to manage acknowledgments for higher level donors.
Provides management, guidance, evaluation, and mentorship to coaches and staff. Supports professional development of administrative, coaching, and recreation staff to promote their accomplishments. Makes sound decisions towards the success of the programs while keeping a positive environment for the student-athlete and coaches through guidance and feedback. *
Oversees NCAA and Title IX compliance for the Department of Athletics and Recreation in an effort to ensure the overall treatment and equality of all students are comparable and consistent with regulatory guidelines and statutes. Serves as an active member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, representing the University and/or the Conference at the national level. Actively participates in goverance at the regional and national level, including the NCAA, NACWAA, NACDA, and other national organizations as necessary and/or appropriate.
Establishes, cultivates, and maintains effective working relationships with students, faculty, administrators, staff, the Student Government Association, alumni, friends, athletics support organizations, and the local community. Serves on a variety of student and institutional initiatives and/or committees.
Interacts with students and parents to resolve highly sensitive and difficult student-athlete issues.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
