The Director of Budget and Finance plays a pivotal role in ensuring the financial stability and success of the Division I College Athletics Program. This position requires a strategic mindset, financial acumen, and a commitment to advancing the program’s goals within a dynamic collegiate sports environment. This position oversees the program’s financial operations, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting to ensure effective allocation of resources and compliance with financial policies and regulations.
1.
Financial Planning and Budgeting:
o Develop, implement, and monitor the annual operating budget for the Athletics program.
o Collaborate with department heads and coaches to create budgetary plans aligned with program goals and objectives.
o Analyze historical financial data and trends to forecast future financial needs and make informed budgetary decisions.

Financial Reporting and Analysis:
o Generate regular financial reports and dashboards for senior leadership, highlighting key performance metrics, budget variances, and financial health.
o Provide comprehensive financial analysis and insights to support strategic decision-making and resource allocation.
o Evaluate the department’s annual operating budget request and make recommendations to the Executive Assoc. AD for Admin and the Director of Athletics.

Resource Allocation:
o Allocate funds in accordance with program priorities, ensuring efficient and effective use of resources.
o Assess funding requests from various departments within the athletics program, weighing financial implications and program needs.

Compliance and Regulatory Oversight:
o Ensure adherence to
NCAA
, conference, and university financial policies and guidelines.
o Coordinate and support audits and financial reviews, providing accurate documentation and explanations as required.
o Maintain a working list of current and incoming athletes.
o Assist in the preparation of departmental, university,
NCAA
and government reports, studies, and surveys.
o Maintain and submit reports and forms related to student-athlete financial aid, scholarship renewals and reductions.
o Supervise athletics event management/facility scheduling and staffing of athletics home contests.
o Oversee, reconcile, and consult with the Director of Athletics on status of all departmental and camp budgets.
o Collect and review countable athletically related activities logs. Accept or flag for additional review.

Financial Process Improvement:
o Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes, enhance reporting accuracy, and implement best practices.
o Work collaboratively with relevant stakeholders to optimize financial procedures and systems.

Team Leadership and Development:
o Supervise and lead a team responsible for financial operations, including payroll, accounts payable, and budget administration.
o Foster a collaborative and results-oriented team culture, promoting professional growth and development.
7.
Fundraising and Revenue Generation:
o Collaborate with the Athletics Director and development team to support fundraising initiatives, donor engagement, and revenue-generating activities.
o Provide financial insights and projections to assist in strategic fundraising planning.
8.
Procurement and Departmental Operations
o Process, verify and reconcile departmental business operations, including invoices, deposits, check requests, travel expense forms, purchase orders, and credit card statements.
o Approve, manage, and record all financial transactions both expenditure and revenue to the Athletic Department’s departmental operational accounts and departmental fundraising accounts.
o Initiate budget transfers and expense transfers requested by the department.
o Act as a resource for the coaching staffs in the purchasing of equipment and supplies.
o Act as the primary contact for coaches and staff during the completion of travel and related financial paperwork.
o Work with University Advancement to process donation checks, track balances, and manage the expense processing for fundraising accounts.
· Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting (Master’s degree preferred).
· Minimum five years of relevant fiscal management experience, preferably in an athletics or collegiate setting.
· Strong understanding of
NCAA
and conference financial regulations and compliance preferred.
· Proficiency in financial analysis, budgeting, and reporting tools.
· Excellent communication and people skills for effective collaboration and relationship-building.
· Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience managing a team.
· Diligence, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a criminal background check as mandated by Tennessee State University.
