Job Description

This position reports directly to the Associate Athletics Director of Compliance and is responsible for supporting this position in ensuring an effective compliance program is in place. This position shall continuously assess and demonstrate that Vanderbilt University meets NCAAdefinition of institutional control, University policy, and/or state and federal regulations.

Vanderbilt University’s Athletics Department prepares student-athletes to become leaders and champions in life by placing the highest values on integrity, character, sportsmanship and victory. Vanderbilt is a charter member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and is the conference's only private school. The University fields 17 varsity teams (6 men's teams and 11 women's teams), 15 of which compete in the SEC.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Support the Associate Athletics Director in ensuring an effective compliance program is in place. All assigned duties are designed to ensure the compliance office continuously assesses and demonstrates Vanderbilt University meets the NCAA’s definition of institutional control, University policy, and/or state and federal regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, proactively evaluating and detecting infractions, monitoring, documenting, educating, and developing policies and procedures for all the regulations in the NCAA manual, University policy, and/or state and federal regulations to reduce the risk of inappropriate conduct.    1. Assist the Associate Athletics Director in promoting an ethical culture.
   2. Assist the Associate Athletics Director in ensuring that governing authorities (Chancellor, Athletics Director) are knowledgeable about the content and operation of the compliance program so able to exercise oversight with respect to its implementation and effectiveness.
   3. Assist the Associate Athletics Director in ensuring reasonable efforts are made to detect through the exercise of due diligence, whether any individual has engaged in illegal activities or other conduct inconsistent with an effective compliance and ethics program.
   4. Take reasonable steps to ensure that an effective compliance program is followed by serving as the lead and/or support administrator in monitoring the daily operations as assigned. Taking reasonable steps to consistently communicate standards and procedures, and other aspects of the compliance program by conducting effective training programs and disseminating information appropriate to such individuals' respective roles and responsibilities – including, but not limited to:
      • Serve as the primary and secondary liaison as assigned (Refer to Job Description Attachments) to ensure the following responsibilities are fulfilled:
      • Continually monitor select publications and news outlets to identify additional risks not previously documented and best practices at other agencies and communicate this information to relevant staff to enhance departmental operations (Refer to Job Description Attachments).
2. Monitoring, auditing and evaluating/assessing the program’s effectiveness – including, but not limited to:
   • Enhance office operations through attendance at NCAA, SEC, and other professional organizational conferences, workshops, and seminars.
   • Assist in reviewing the compliance policy and procedure manual to ensure it is engaged and functioning.
   • Assist with internal/external reviews/audits when necessary.
   • Promoting and enforcing the compliance program consistently throughout the organization – including, but not limited to:
     • Assist with responding to all interpretive issues in accordance with office policy.
     • Assist in preparing legislative issues to bring to offices daily staff meetings and facilitate legislative issues when necessitated.
     • Assist with compiling waivers for the NCAA or SEC pursuant to office policy.
     • Assist with investigations of NCAA or SEC rules, University policy, and/or state and federal regulations and report confirmed infractions to the NCAA, SEC, and/or other appropriate entities.
   • Respond appropriately and consistently to inappropriate conduct and prevent further similar inappropriate conduct – including, but not limited to:
     • Alert the Associate Athletics Director of any unique or potentially problematic issues immediately when identified.
     • Ensure that in each violation or instance of inappropriate conduct, that preventative measures (e.g., education, enhancement of policy and procedure), are implemented to remediate and prevent future occurrences.
     • Provide a method to report inappropriate conduct without fear of retaliation.
3. Other duties as assigned by the Associate Athletics Director of Compliance.

Supervisory Relationships

This position does not have supervisory responsibility and reports administratively and functionally to the Associate Athletics Director for Compliance.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree is necessary.
• A Master’s or Juris Doctor degree is preferred.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in NCAA Division I Institutional or Conference compliance office or NCAA National Office is necessary.
