Sam Houston State University Advancement is seeking a Director of Development join their team. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Development, the Director of Development will focus on identifying and cultivating prospects with an emphasis on gifts of $25,000 and above for SHSU Athletics. The Director will assess the interests and desires of these prospects and work to align their philanthropy with the various divisions and departments directly related to SHSU Athletics. Primary responsibilities include but not limited to: Builds and carries an active portfolio of 40 – 60 prospective donors. Engages in qualification, strategy development, relationship building, and closing of gifts at $25,000+. Participates in goal setting, proposal preparation, strategy development, and stewardship as required for donors in the portfolio. Successfully and consistently delivers funding proposals to prospective and current donors. Effectively works with, communicates with, and collaborates with faculty, academic leaders, and other development colleagues to develop campus-wide funding opportunities and reach goals. Maintains appropriate electronic documentation on a timely basis, including engagement activities, proposal tracking, contact reports, donor strategies, and forecasting. Works closely with the Director of Athletics, Associate Vice President for Development, and Vice President of University Advancement in the development of goals, objectives, and strategies to secure the private support necessary to advance the university’s Athletic program to the next level of achievement. Provides oversight and direction to increase philanthropic support for SHSU Athletics. Demonstrates ability to execute successful full-cycle donor strategy. Willingness to collaborate and work as part of a team. Demonstrates ability to be a self-starter. Ability to drive results. Highly effective communication skills (written, verbal, interpersonal). Ability to think strategically and creatively and work well under pressure. Capable of working independently, while also engaging in collaboration between teams. Ability to travel frequently to visit prospects and donors. Ability to use discretion and maintain integrity. Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience in intercollegiate athletics fundraising. Knowledge of Sam Houston State policies and procedures preferred. Experience with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge database. Ability to build lasting relationships. Able to move effectively and effortlessly in social settings with wealthy and influential individuals, senior administrators, and governmental officials. Work collaboratively within a complex university environment as a team member of University Advancement and other colleagues across the campus. Possess a high level of integrity and character, with the ability to maintain confidential information, and have a deep commitment to work with donors to build relationships. Be a highly motivated, energetic self-starter, who possesses sound judgment and decision-making ability, and be detail oriented with solid organizational ability. Demonstrated skill in gift solicitation, closing sales, or a combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and ability. An understanding of and commitment to the importance of public higher education, with a desire to embrace the mission of Sam Houston State University. Strategic thinker; analytical; active listener; strong people skills with a warm, empathetic, engaging personality; strong interpersonal communication. Effective speaking and writing abilities. Ability to travel and conduct frequent weekend and evening work.This position may be designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
