The Intercollegiate Athletics has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of Men’s Basketball Mental Performance to join their team.
This position reports to the Head Men’s Basketball Coach.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position provides support to the Men’s Basketball coaching staff and student-athletes. The position will have extensive involvement with coaches and student-athletes on a daily basis, both collectively and individually. The primary responsibilities will be to provide analysis and performance related data and insights to the Head Coach and assistant coaches about student-athletes and opponents.
• This position will collect and analyze extensive practice and game data to evaluate the mental performance strengths and weaknesses of basketball program student-athletes and opponents. Using independent judgment, identify, determine and break down specific practice and game content to identify style of play in order to develop and implement competitive strategies and game plans.
• Create a detailed description for style of play.
• Analyze and define coaching strategies implemented.
• Assist in assessing athletic performance and improvement.
• Provide feedback and guidance regarding athletic progress in the context of mental performance development, strengthening, and improvements.
• Assist coaching staff in maintaining an athlete management system to track progress and development of each student-athlete in the program as a basketball player, a student, and a high performing member of the community.
• Collect and track game statistics and metrics throughout the season and over the course of each student athlete’s career at the University of Washington.
• This position will be responsible to convey the analysis and results to the specific coaching staff on a daily basis and will need to have high level expertise with basketball specific terminology and strategies which will be applied through mental performance strategies.
This position has the following objectives as it relates to the development of the University of Washington Men’s Basketball mental performance program:
To develop greater focus and concentration, thus preserving attention during intense competition.
To teach the skills needed to be present to the process and mindful during performance events and everyday life.
To practice responding wisely to stress rather than reacting out of fear.
To develop resilience by learning how to be present and cope with emotionally difficult or physically painful experiences.
To recognize and shift from critical to compassionate inner self-talk.
• This position will work consistently with individual players in a one-on-one setting to teach mindfulness, awareness, and mental performance knowledge.
• This position may also teach meditation, mindfulness, awareness and mental performance knowledge in a group setting as needed.
• This position will not conduct and therapy or counseling activities and will work closely with the Student-Athlete Wellness Services Coordinator to identify student-athletes that may need further services as provided by our ICA Mental Health Team.
• Assist the coaching staff with recruit evaluations to determine program needs and potential recruits who could be high performers in the systems implemented by the coaching staff.
• Interface with the athletic department student facing areas to ensure student-athletes maximize their potential in all facets of their lives, on and off the court.
• Develop alumni relations in conjunction with the Tyee Club and community relations in the Seattle Community.
• Serve as a mentor to student-athletes in athletic, academic and personal affairs.
Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree and minimum of two years of experience in playing or coaching college basketball, or analytics, or sport administration; or an equivalent combination of any of the listed experience, or related education and experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• A minimum of two years of experience teaching mental performance skills in athletic settings.
• Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines.
• Ability to work with a diverse group of coaches, administration and student-athletes.
• Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Three to five years of experience of either playing or coaching collegiate basketball experience preferred. Masters of psychology or similar study program preferred.
