The Director of Photography position is a professional position responsible for the day-to-day operations of the LSU Athletics Photography department. This role oversees the planning, shooting, and archiving of photographs for games, practices, asset days, and other team and department events.
This position collaborates with multiple departments, including communications, creative design, video, social media and branding, Sports Properties, NIL, and team staff to document in a creative way the department’s student-athletes, staff, and coaches. Ability to work in a team/collaborative environment is a must.
35% Oversees all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Athletic Photography department, including but not limited to facility, budget, equipment, travel, and other administrative responsibilities; Oversees photography, live transmitting, and editing for the athletic department, including, but not limited to, photography for all sports, including individual portraits, team photographs, and event action photography. Shoots photos at select practices and events and behind-the-scenes opportunities around the facilities. Edits photos in a timely manner and archive for historical purposes; Collaborates with communications, social media and branding, creative design, marketing, TAF, Sports Properties, and various other departments to fulfill any needs before, during, and after games and events; Oversees photo studio and photo shoot requests, including equipment needs and setup (lighting, backdrops, scenery, etc.). Responsible for all team and department headshots and portraits; Manages framing and posting of photographs in all athletic facilities, working with coaching staff in various sports to order and print photographs for that purpose; Print pictures for various ceremonial events and the distribution of communications and public relations values.
25% Manage a staff of full-time photography coordinators (2), paid student photographers (9), and volunteer student photo interns (8). Leads the hiring, training, and scheduling for all, and oversees the student intern program to mentor and develop photography skills, etc.
20% Manage all areas of photography/primary shooter for a sport as assigned. This includes all practices, games, recruiting, events, and other areas for the program. Collaborates with the coaches, recruiting and personnel staff, administration, and creative team to ideate and execute highly impactful photoshoots and sets for official visits; Ability to take photos, edit, and transmit promptly based on specific requirements; Experience with Apple/Mac computers; Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and Lightroom), PhotoShelter, Photo Mechanic, Photo Sharing Systems, Epson Large Format Printers and off-camera lighting systems.
10% Manages the LSU Athletics photo archive and content distribution system for student-athletes and staff. Responsible for identifying processes for the sorting of images into digital archives, drives, and scanning and cataloging historical photographs. Assures that photos are distributed in a timely fashion through the appropriate platform.
5% Manages and identifies revenue generation opportunities for the photography unit and manages the online photo store. Liaison for external organizations for photo requests and managing LSU’s relationship with Getty Images.
5% Advances and supports LSU and Athletics Department initiatives through personal participation in educational and developmental opportunities, as well as participation in the transformational culture consistent with the values of LSU and its Athletics Department; Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's in Photography, multimedia or other relevant communications field with three years of related experience; Ability to take photos, edit, and transmit in a timely manner and based on specific requirements; Experience with Apple/Mac computers; Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and Lightroom), Photo Mechanic, and off camera lighting. LSU values skills, experience, and expertise. Preferred Qualifications:
Completion in course work in the field of photography, journalism, digital media, mass communication or a related field is preferred; Experience with professional or collegiate sports teams is preferred.
Special or Physical Requirements:
Ability and willingness to work extended days, weekends and holidays. Must be able to lift and carry between 25 and 50 pounds on a regular basis. Position requires incumbent to stand for extended periods. They must also be capable to stoop, kneel and crouch.
