Job Description

Randolph-Macon College invites applications for a full-time, 10-month Director of Sports Medicine position. This leadership role oversees the College’s NCAA Division III sports medicine program, including student-athlete healthcare, injury prevention and management, emergency care, return-to-play decisions, department operations, and staff supervision. The Director works collaboratively with the sports medicine staff, team physicians, coaches, athletic administrators, and campus partners to ensure high-quality care and practices aligned with industry standards.  

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate medical care of intercollegiate student-athletes in accordance with the RMC Policies and Procedures Manual, including prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses.
  • Envision and develop programs that advance sports medicine services and promote student-athlete health and wellness in alignment with Randolph-Macon College’s philosophy and resources.
  • Collaborate effectively with athletic administration, coaches, RMC staff, student-athletes, and campus partners to support and advance sports medicine services and student-athlete well-being.
  • Make appropriate decisions in areas of therapeutic exercise, therapeutic modalities, manual therapy treatments and return to play.
  • Organize and provide athletic training coverage for practices, competitions, and other athletic events as needed.
  • Implement injury prevention strategies, including taping, bracing, therapeutic exercise, and movement screening to prepare athletes for participation.
  • Refer student-athletes to team physicians as appropriate and implement physician-directed treatment plans for injury management.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively across a large, diverse population including, but not limited to, all student-athletes, fellow staff, athletic training students, physicians, coaches, and other sports medicine umbrella practitioners.
  • Make appropriate decisions regarding sports medicine emergency action plans and implement plans for each athletic venue.
