This is a managerial position responsible for developing, coordinating, and administering a comprehensive sports medicine program for intercollegiate sports at Stephen F. Austin State University utilizing the six domains of athletic training: prevention, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation, organization and administration, and professional responsibility. Responsible for performing professional and administrative services essential for the successful implementation and development of the sports medicine program. Works under limited supervision, with substantial latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Director of Athletics.
Supervises the work of athletic training room personnel, to include evaluating each member of the athletic training room staff on a regular basis, evaluating the effectiveness of outside medical providers, and providing educational opportunities for student trainers as a part of the overall operation of the training program.
Oversees and directs the sports medicine staff, to include hiring, training, and supervising professional and student trainers.
Develops the overall sports medicine program, including injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, educational programs, and counseling for student-athletes.
Manages the sports medicine facility. Assists in developing and managing the sports medicine budget.
Coordinates and schedules physical examinations and medical referrals for student-athletes to determine their ability to practice and compete.
Oversees the departmental drug testing program.
Coordinates and oversees the departmental concussion management plan.
Coordinates the recordkeeping and documentation of student-athlete health and insurance information in the electronic medical records (
EMR
) system.
Coordinates health insurance claims program with university vendor.
Evaluates and recommends new techniques and equipment to enhance the benefits of the sports medicine program.
Develops sports medicine policies, procedures, and protocols in close participation with physicians and strength/conditioning staff. Coordinates physician and auxiliary treatment services.
Travels with assigned sport or sports.
Administers first aid. Delivers emergency treatment of acute injuries.
Attends university, conference, National Collegiate Athletic Association (
NCAA
), and other organizational meetings, as assigned.
Adheres to all applicable
NCAA
, conference, National Athletic Trainers Association (
NATA
), and university rules and regulations.
Adheres to all applicable state and federal medical privacy rules and regulations.
Participates on university committees and task forces, as required.
Assists in the implementation of the strategic vision developed for the department.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of federal and state regulations and standards related to sports medicine and student-athlete privacy.
Knowledge of professional standards and regulations.
Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.
Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
Ability to manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget.
Ability to train and supervise others.
Ability to obtain and maintain
NATA
Certification, Athletic Trainer licensure in Texas, and
CPR
and First Aid certifications.
Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, health, exercise science, or a related field is required.
Five years of supervisory experience as an athletic trainer is required.
NCAA
athletic training experience is required.
NATA
Certification, Athletic Trainer licensure in Texas, and certification in
CPR
and First Aid is required. Candidates without current Athletic Trainer licensure in Texas,
CPR
certification, and/or First Aid certification will be considered if license and certifications can be obtained prior to start date.
Master’s degree is preferred.
NCAA
Division I athletic training experience is preferred.
This is a security-sensitive position subject to criminal record check.

Commensurate with Experience, Salary Grade - 7

This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (
TRS
) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
