The Graduate Assistant (GA) Strength and Conditioning Coach assists the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach in the design, implementation, and supervision of athletic development programs for collegiate student-athletes. This position balances hands-on coaching responsibilities with graduate-level academic studies. Coaching & Programming - 55
- Design Workouts: Write periodized year-round strength, speed, agility, and conditioning programs for your assigned sports teams.
- Lead Sessions: Run daily team workouts, lead warm-ups, and actively coach student-athletes through lifting and running sessions.
- Teach Mechanics: Provide instant feedback and technical cues on complex movements like Olympic lifts, squats, and sprints.
- Run Testing: Administer periodic performance testing (e.g., max testing, vertical jump, sprints) and track athlete progress data.
Clerical & Administrative - 30
- Creating and implementing program designs for athletes.
- Communicating with coaches and athletic Trainers about limitations, injuries, and workout plans.
Facility Operations - 10
- Manage Setup of equipment and maintain cleanliness of the weight room.
Other - 5
- Other duties as assigned.
Educational Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in related field; Current enrollment as a student at the institution; at least half-time status, which is 6 credit hours.
Other Required Qualifications
- CPR/AED certification.
Maintain academic good standing. If a student's grade point average falls below a 3.00 (academic warning), the student will have next semester or summer term to improve and return to good standing before termination of the assistantship. Should a student fail to return to good standing after the next semester or summer term, or should a student receive academic exclusion and be dismissed from the degree program, the assistantship will be terminated at once.
This position will work in-person 19 hours per week.
Full assistantships (19 hours/week) cover all but $25 of tuition.
Applicable student fees are not covered by the assistantship.
Course loads for graduate assistants must be at least 6 graduate semester hours.
Required Experience
0-6 months in related field of exercise science.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Ability to work a flexible schedule around class commitments.
NSCA-CSCS certification.
Preferred Experience
1-2 years in strength and conditioning.
$10.00 / hour
ABILITIES
- Weight Room Command: Exceptional vocal presence. You must confidently direct, motivate, and control a room of 30+ high-energy athletes at once.
- Adaptability: High flexibility with scheduling. College athletics change constantly due to weather, travel, or roster shifts; you must adjust workouts on the fly.
- Time Management: Master scheduling. You will juggle 20 hours of weekly coaching, early morning lifts, full-time graduate classes, and studying.
- Interpersonal Communication: Seamless collaboration. You must act as the bridge between sports medicine (athletic trainers), head sport coaches, and the athletes
KNOWLEDGE
- Basic understanding of program design and implementation
SKILLS
- Movement Instruction: Mastery in teaching complex lifts. You must spot flaws and correct form instantly for Olympic lifts, plyometrics, and compound movements.
- Periodization Design: Ability to build science-based training blocks. You must understand how to peak athletes for competition and manage training volume.
- First Aid & Emergency Response: Immediate execution of safety protocols. You must maintain active CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications to handle emergencies on the floor.
