Academics for Student Athletes is seeking a Head Academic Counselor/Assistant Director. This is a full-time (1.00
FTE
), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The Head Academic Counselor/Assistant Director in Academics for Student Athletes (
ASA
) supervises a small team of academic counselors and oversees the academic counseling of all sports teams, with the exception of football and men’s basketball. The Head Academic Counselor/Assistant Director utilizes knowledge, expertise, and understanding of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (
NCAA
), conference, and University rules and regulations as they apply to the provision of academic advising and support to student-athletes. The decision-making and actions within this position must be accurate, and transparent, and adhere to the legislation of the
NCAA
and conference as well as to the policies and procedures of the university and
ASA
.
The Head Academic Counselor/Assistant Director provides counsel to student-athletes regarding academics and life skills; acts as liaison among coaches, sport administrators, teaching faculty, staff, and student-athletes; works collaboratively with other units across campus in efforts to assist student-athletes effectively; monitors and tracks the academic performance and eligibility of student-athletes to ensure compliance with institutional, conference, and
NCAA
requirements; and serves as a liaison with Athletics Compliance and Office of the Registrar to ensure
ASA
engages in
NCAA
continuing eligibility rules education. This position is the recruiting liaison for official and unofficial student-athlete visitations and monitors
APR
and
GSR
student-athlete data.

60% – Serve as Head Academic Counselor
Meet regularly with assigned students as a resource, provide proactive counsel regarding academic performance and guidance on academic requirements, and maintain academic files.
Serve as a resource for student-athletes.
Maintain academic files for assigned students.
Prepare reports and communications related to assigned students detailing academic progress.
Proactively monitor and track the academic performance and
NCAA
eligibility of assigned student-athletes to ensure compliance with institutional standards and
NCAA
requirements.
Establish and maintain productive and positive working relationships with the
ASA
team, student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and other units on campus in providing academic support for student-athletes.
Engage with teaching faculty, tutors/peer educators, and mentors regarding student academic progress throughout each term.
Provide recommendations and intervention strategies to student-athletes based on their academic performance.
Support the implementation of ASA’s Academic Support Programs.
Meet with prospective student-athletes and their family members to discuss the services provided by
ASA
and the university.
30% – Lead and Support Academic Counselors
Provide direct supervision to two full-time academic counselor staff members.
Lead the recruiting, hiring, training, onboarding, mentoring, and evaluation of academic counselors.
Assist with executing ASA’s vision, mission, and values.
Assist with developing and implementing departmental strategic plans, policies, and procedures.
Serve as the liaison to Athletic Compliance and Office of the Registrar to ensure
NCAA
continuing eligibility education opportunities for
ASA
.
Serve as the
ASA
liaison to the Academic Advising Counsel and campus advising community.
Further develop and implement Academic Counselor onboarding procedures.
Implement proactive academic advising and counseling best practices, guided by the N4A and
NACADA
to support student retention and on-time graduation.
Collaborate with the
ASA
leadership team,
ASA
staff, athletic administration, and coaches to implement standard criterion that guides student-athlete support plans and resources.
Conduct assessment of academic counseling services, including collaborating with the director and other
ASA
staff members to develop student learning outcomes, goals, and objectives.
Create annual professional development plans for the academic counseling team.
Assist with monitoring program budget.
Develop prospective student-athlete recruiting visit meeting protocols
10% – Team Contributions, Professional Development, and Other Duties
Accept additional responsibilities and assignments at the direction of the Director of
ASA
.
Contribute to a pleasant work environment and maintain respectful professional working relationships.
Attend and actively engage in staff meetings, taking a leadership role to advance team progress and contribute productively.
Support
BEST
summer bridge programming.
Serve on search committees.
Attend trainings, professional meetings, seminars, workshops, and conferences.
Collaborate regularly with co-workers, campus partners, and supervisor to successfully achieve mutually sought goals for the department and University.
Master’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, sociology, or related field
Three years of experience working with student-athletes within an athletic academic support program in higher education.
Strong working knowledge of
NCAA
eligibility requirements governing continuing eligibility, supported by practical experience.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
Strong organizational, communication, and administrative skills, including attention to detail, timely follow-up, and meeting deadlines.
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
