Definition of Classification:

Direct the daily operations of the athletic training facilities and all aspects associated with the administering and providing athletic training services and coverage for 21 intercollegiate athletic teams.  The position will direct with all aspects of the sports medicine program. The position will direct, supervise, and evaluate all aspects of the athletic training program, including hiring, mentoring, and supervising of assistant athletic trainer personnel. The head athletic trainer will also perform professional and administrative services essential for the successful implementation and development of the program. The trainer reports to The Director of Athletics.

This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Directs the athletic training program to include physical evaluation and treatment services to all student athletes.
• Coordinates physicians (orthopedic and primary care sport medicine) clinic visits, health care provider visits and athletics event coverage.
• Collaborates with strength and conditioning coaching staff in developing conditioning, weight training, nutrition, and rehabilitation programs for student-athletes.
• Oversee implementation of concussion protocol for post-injury surveillance and treatment under the supervision of team physician.
• Establish strong relationships with institutional counseling services and other health care providers in our local community.
• Serves as a liaison between physicians, administrators, coaches, parents, and student-athletes regarding injury prevention, diagnosis, care, management, treatment, rehabilitation, and insurance claim submission.
• Develops overall sports medicine program for the University, including injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, educational programs, and counseling for student-athletes.
• Prepare student-athletes for treatment and ensure comfort and safety of student-athletes.
• Preparation and implementation of athletic training room policies and venue emergency action plans.
• Utilizes an electronic records system to maintain documentation of student-athlete participation health, injury, and rehabilitation records.
• Supervise, plan, direct, and assign work of assigned staff including student-employees; make hiring and disciplinary decisions; provide feedback on performance and approve timesheets.
• Serves as the NCAA Athletics Health Care Administrator.
• Orders and maintain necessary inventory and supplies.
• Participate in professional education of athletic staff and coaches.
• Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualification Guidelines

Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

Experience/Training/Education:

Required

• Master's degree required in Physical Education, Sports Medicine, or a related field.
• Must have a current/valid NATABOC certification.
• Must have a current/valid CPR/AED certification.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and must provide a current DMV printout with a good driving record. Note: Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment. A valid California Class “C” driver’s license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).

Note: A physical examination demonstrating physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred

• Work experience with a variety of sports preferred.
• Three (3) years of athletic training experience at the collegiate level, with 3 years of progressive leadership experience.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Knowledge of athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques, as well as athletic equipment, and injury assessment and treatment.
• Knowledge of first aid skills to help athletes address acute injuries, generally in a high-pressure situation such as a game.
• Communicate effectively and follow instructions, both verbally and in writing.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to operate standard office equipment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Ability to recommend appropriate courses of action within established guidelines.
• Ability to foster strong, positive relationships and align both internal and external resources to achieve university objectives.
• Ability to exercise discretion and work with confidentiality.
• Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

Working Conditions:

Field/outdoor environment and standard office setting. Duties performed are of an active nature, requiring sufficient physical stamina to carry out duties. Some duties may be performed in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required.

Physical Demands:

Incumbents work standing for long periods of time; walk on a regular basis; may travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

HIRING RANGE:  Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the  Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.

PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS:  For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.  Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
