The Head Cheer Coach is responsible for the leadership, supervision, and overall direction of the OPSU Cheerleading program. This includes managing all aspects of team development, recruitment, scheduling, and public appearances, while fostering a culture of pride, school spirit, safety, and student success. The coach is expected to support the mission of the athletics department and the university.
Responsibilities
Demonstrated experience coaching cheerleading at the collegiate, high school, or competitive level.
Strong knowledge of stunting, tumbling, sideline, and competition cheer.
Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel with the team as needed.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Develop and execute a comprehensive cheerleading program including practices, performances, and appearances.
Coach and mentor student-athletes to improve technique, strength, and performance.
Promote a positive team culture that encourages discipline, respect, and school pride.
Recruit qualified student-athletes in accordance with university policies.
Support team retention through consistent communication, mentorship, and academic encouragement.
Coordinate cheer participation at home athletic events, pep rallies, parades, and campus/community events.

Collaborate with marketing and game operations staff to enhance the game day environment.
Ensure the physical safety of cheerleaders through proper training, supervision, and adherence to safety guidelines.
Maintain current CPR, First Aid, and concussion training certifications.
Plan and manage program budgets, purchasing, and fundraising efforts.
Maintain records of practices, events, injuries, and participation.
Schedule team practices and manage facility usage in coordination with the Athletic Department.
Other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or his/her designee.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
Experience managing a collegiate cheer program.
Stand, walk, bend, lift, and perform physical activity for extended periods.
Ability to lift/move equipment up to 50 lbs.
