Job Summary - The HPU Cheer Team coach plays a pivotal role in leading the cheer team program in a
positive Christian manner, a crucial aspect that contributes to the holistic development of students. The coach's
direction is instrumental in promoting school spirit and school pride, supporting the Yellow Jacket athletic teams,
and serving as a positive representative of the University. The coach's responsibilities encompass the cheer
team program, including recruiting, member selection, practices, and performances. The Howard Payne
University Cheer Team, a co-ed team, cheers at athletic events, represents the University at special events, and
may participate in competitions. The coach, in collaboration with the Director of Athletics and Assistant Director
of Athletics, accepts and delegates tasks. The coach's leadership is integral to a program that significantly
contributes to the holistic development of students.
Minimum Qualifications – Bachelor's degree from an accredited University or at least three years of directly
related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree is preferred.
College participation or coaching experience is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned by the Director of
Athletics.
University Mission Statement and Core Values.
Train cheerleaders for successful participation on the team (i.e. cheers, audience
engagement/participation, stunts, tumbling, dance, jumps, and appearance).
Set and announce schedules for practices, performances, summer camp, tryouts, community events,
away games, and competitions.
Obtain and keep current American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA)
Spirit Safety Certification to ensure compliance with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
guidelines.
Maintain awareness of current cheer practices, trends, and safety requirements.
Enforce University policies and procedures.
Enforce HPU Cheer Team Handbook policies and procedures.
Implement activities to recruit new students to HPU and the cheer program.
Model and encourage behaviors that support the mission and values of the University.
Maintain regular contact with the Director of Athletics and other key University staff members.
Coordinate and supervise the recruiting process, as well as carry a roster that aligns with University
expectations, NCAA sports sponsorship and full competition.

16. Supervise the mascot and mascot functions.

NCAA and ASC Rules and Regulations - The coach must remain in compliance with all NCAA and ASC
regulations, including but not limited to the following:
a. Playing and practice seasons
b. Coach involvement in recruiting efforts. Maintain a full roster size.
c. Pre-season and post-season workouts must be voluntary, open to all students, and may not
involve any athletically related activity.
Supervisory Responsibilities - Directly supervises any staff part-time coaches, graduate assistants, and
volunteer coaches. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the University’s policies and
applicable laws. The coach will supervise 17-25 student participants regarding class attendance, tutoring
attendance, academic problems, and degree requirements. Also, coaches will monitor facilities for safety and
security and will stop any activity that is dangerous to the student-athlete or other students.

Education and/or Experience - Bachelor's degree from an accredited University or at least three years of

Language Skills - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions and procedure manuals in English; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to

Math Skills - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,
common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar
graphs.
Reasoning Ability - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in
written, oral, diagram, or schedule form in English
Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have excellent working knowledge of
Internet Explorer; Design: Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word; and Desktop Publishing software.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - Must be 18 years of age and maintain a current Texas driver's
license. You must be able to drive University vehicles, rent a vehicle, and become van-certified.
Other Qualifications - Must be able to travel at least 50% of the time.
