The purpose of the Head Coach - Men's Hockey position is to develop, promote, and supervise all facets of the University’s Division I Men's Hockey program while abiding by the rules and regulations of the NCAA, University of North Dakota and the conference. This position provides assistance to the Athletics Department in the area of providing comprehensive instruction to the team which includes, but is not limited to, teaching proper skills and techniques, teaching basic physical health concepts to include nutritional education, teaching team and individual leadership concepts/skills as well as providing general safety instruction. Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes. Must have a commitment to compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide general safety instruction for all activities in which the team and/or individuals participate. Specifically instruct student-athletes on safe training and exercise techniques and ensure assistant coaches are doing the same.
Provide support and encouragement to promote the mental well-being of the student-athletes and ensure assistant coaches are doing the same.
Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student-athletes and ensure assistant coaches are doing the same.
Develop a competitive program within the conference with the goal of post-season play.
Achieve academic success and acceptable graduation rates for team by providing academic support to the student-athletes, directing the student-athletes to the proper resource offices, and enforcing all academic policies.
Provide social media supervision of student-athletes.
Motivate student athletes and develop athletic and academic talent and ensure assistant coaches are doing the same.
Provide overall supervision for team practices and games, practice/game management, & game preparations/strategies.
Recruit and Evaluate Prospective Student-Athletes
Recruit quality prospective student-athletes for the program.
Conduct recruiting process with integrity, ethics, and knowledge.
Handle documentation for each prospective student-athlete in accordance with the NCAA and UND Athletics Department compliance protocols/rules.
Thorough knowledge of and commitment to compliance and follow all NCAA, conference and UND rules and regulations.
Adherence to all NCAA, conference and UND rules and regulations.
General Program Administration
Maintain effective professional working relationship with all student-athletes, staff, all coaches/programs, administration, alumni, general public, NCAA and conference officials.
Hire quality assistant coaches, as applicable, and provide supervision of staff.
Maintain an effective work ethic concentrating on efficiency in tasks assigned and timely completion of requested materials/forms.
Ensure student-athlete and head coach attendance at all required meetings including, but not limited to, compliance, life skills, & administrative meetings.
Provide disciplinary supervision of student athletes and promote/support of all related policies.
Perform budget development and demonstrate fiscal management, adhere to all budget parameters & mandates, and support all related policies.
Effective management of admissions, compliance, housing, and eligibility issues.
Adhere to all academic, admission, eligibility and housing policies and support all related policies.
Ensure staff adheres to all budget, academic, admission, eligibility, compliance and housing policies and support all related policies.
Thorough knowledge of and commitment to compliance and follow all NCAA, conference, and UND rules and regulations.
External Functions
Ensure team participation in community service activities.
Be responsive to local, regional, and national media.
Maintain contact with team alumni, boosters, and fans.
Serve as a spokesperson for the University’s program.
Develop community support for the program via social media and marketing and promotional actions.
Participate in Athletics department and fundraising activities.
Support marketing efforts - address marketing and branding issues, as requested, assist with the marketing of the program (use of social media), as appropriate.
Provide social media supervision of student-athletes and support all related policies.
Supervise, manage, and implement all aspects of camps/clinics/special events, as applicable.
Adhere to all camp and compliance parameters/mandates and support all related policies and ensure assistant coaches are doing the same as applicable.
Other duties assigned by Director of Athletics.
Required Competencies
Must have an effective professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.
Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and have strong organizational skills.
Ability to develop a competitive NCAA Division I program.
Must have commitment to NCAA compliance and follow all NCAA, conference and UND rules and regulations.
Must have commitment to academic success of student-athletes.
Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes including having a valid driver’s license.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree.
8 seasons of a combination of full-time collegiate or professional hockey coaching experience and/or professional hockey playing experience.
Experience recruiting players and/or student-athletes for hockey teams.
Valid Driver’s License.
Successful completion of criminal history background check.

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s or advanced degree.
Head coaching experience at the college or professional level.
Current head coach at a NCAA institution or at the professional level.
Demonstrated success as a coach or player, including building a hockey program, winning championships, and/or having a high winning percentage.
Demonstrated success in managing a hockey roster.
Demonstrated success with NCAA compliance.
