Job Description:

Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by coaching and administering the Men's Ice Hockey program. The Head Men's Ice Hockey Coach is responsible for all aspects of the management of the nationally recognized program.

This is a 40 hour per week and 43 weeks per year .833 FTE position.

Essential Functions

1. Organizes and implements practice plans and game management systems.
2. Hires, supervises, mentors, and evaluates assistant coaches.
3. Assists in scheduling league and non-league contests and scrimmages.
4. Makes all team related travel and lodging arrangements.  Ensures proper conduct of team members at all times while representing Norwich during team travel.
5. Assists the equipment manager with the selection and purchase of equipment, uniforms and apparel. Follows guidelines and requirements regarding authorized use of university and department logos and marks, along with equipment safety requirements.
6. Communicates with athletic training staff regarding student-athlete injuries. Follows direction provided by athletic trainers regarding athletes' ability to practice or compete and supports rehab and return to play activities and timelines.
7. Communicates with Kreitzberg Arena staff and women's ice hockey head coach regarding use of the facility, including practice and game times, skills sessions, pre-season team skates, etc.  Also works with arena staff regarding use and management of team locker rooms, athletic training rooms, coaching offices, and storage spaces.
8. Demonstrates proper sideline decorum, models good sportsmanship, and maintains positive relationships with officials/referees, assignors.
9. Establishes and maintains an atmosphere where academics are prioritized. Monitors academic progress of student athletes and communicates as needed with professors and academic support personnel.
10. Completes necessary administrative forms, including, but not limited to: DS travel forms, end of season reports, preseason and in-season rosters, travel expense reports, and evaluations of assistant coaches.
11. Manages program budget - stays within budget limits, meets deadlines for completion of financial forms, and communicates with office manager and Director of Athletics as needed.
12. Organizes and administers fundraising activities in conjunction with the Director of the Maroon and Gold Athletic Association and the Blue Line Club and their Board of Directors.
13. Develops and nurtures alumni and community relations.  Participates in alumni functions and involves team members when appropriate.  Fosters positive community relations through team participation in community service activities, public appearances, game day promotional events, and by connecting with local youth hockey groups, etc.
14. Recruits qualified student athletes (normally a minimum of one quarter of the roster each year). Follows institutional and departmental recruiting procedures, including required use of the Slate recruiting database, in coordination with Admissions.
15. Recognizes the importance of annual retention of quality student-athletes and fosters an atmosphere within the program that supports university retention objectives.
16. Hires, supervises, and mentors assistant coaches and work-study students.
17. Attends required conference meetings.
18. Attends university open houses.
19. Maintains thorough and current knowledge and understanding of all NCAA and conference rules and regulations.

Other Functions

1. Assesses the performance of direct reports and provides frequent feedback to optimize their performance.
2. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information.
3. Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner.
4. Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.
5. Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.
6. Speaks, reads, and writes in English.
7. Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.
8. Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements:

• A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree in a related field is preferred.
• 5 years of relevant experience in ice hockey coaching is preferred.
• Coaching experience in a collegiate environment is preferred.
• Collegiate playing experience in ice hockey is strongly desired.
• Must be knowledgeable of all NCAA rules and regulations.
• Experience in speaking with small and large groups.
• Experience with fundraising activities preferred.
• AED, CPR, and First Aid certification and NCAA Rules Test is required.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook). Experience with Banner, Argos, and Slate or similar software preferred.
• Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 50 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus.
• Frequent evening and weekend hours when in season.
• Travel as needed.

Environmental Conditions

• Work indoors both in the office and hockey arena and outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Frequent computer use at workstation.
• High level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes.
