Under supervision of the Executive Director of Athletics, plan, develop, and supervise the Women’s Basketball program to ensure compliance with all
NCAA
DII
and other accrediting association requirements for college sports.
Plan and develop the women’s basketball program to ensure compliance with established guidelines and regulations for college/university accredited events.
Develop and implement schedules, including practice and home and away competitions, to provide participating student-athletes appropriate training and academic time for continued program eligibility and personal growth.
Recruit prospective athletes through personal visits, telephone interviews, texting, and mail solicitation, focusing on the states of New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado (along with the city of El Paso, Texas) in accordance with established

DII
requirements and standards.
Discuss personal scholastic and athletic goals and objectives with available opportunities at the University.
Identify and recommend potential recruits for available financial assistance through scholarships.
Coordinate and schedule site visits for prospective recruits, parents, and other interested parties.
Monitor academic performance levels of participating student-athletes to ensure compliance with established university and accrediting standards for class attendance and graduation performance.
Counsel and assist students regarding study habits and class performance to promote and encourage continued program eligibility and attainment of degree status.
Plan, develop, and implement a variety of fundraising events for financial and equipment contributions.
Work cooperatively with other conference schools for development of intercollegiate events.
Arrange travel requirements, including meals, lodging, and transportation for athletes, in accordance with available funding and budget constraints.
Coach students throughout all games; review strategies, strengths, and weaknesses of previous, current, and future performance to promote and encourage personal and/or team improvement.
Complete and maintain a variety of records and reports of achievements and activities.
Provide information and/or statistics to the University’s media as well as other local/regional media (i.e.: radio, print, and television) to promote awareness of Western New Mexico University’s athletic programs, students, and environment.
Monitor inventory levels of all uniforms and equipment, prepare purchase requisitions, bid requests, and prepare and monitor operating budget.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Athletics.
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Physical Education, and/or a closely related field required; Master’s degree in Education, Physical Education, or a closely related field preferred. Three (3) years of experience as a women’s head basketball coach at a junior college/college/university level or five (5) years of experience as a women’s assistant basketball coach at a 4-year college or university required. Women’s basketball coaching experience at the
NCAA
DII
level preferred. Former college women’s basketball student-athlete preferred. Recruiting experience in the states of New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado preferred. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Knowledge of available athletic scholarships and their individual requirements and regulations. Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, and methods of coaching student athletes. Knowledge of budget management and development principles and techniques. Skill in applying

Skill in applying and recognizing appropriate coaching methods for optimum student progress, success, and performance. Skill in developing safe and effective training and practice programs for student-athletes. Skill in selecting and encouraging students in athletic and academic success. Skill in performing all necessary movements, drills, and exercises of basketball. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Skill in working in an environment subject to frequent travel, exposure to varying climatic and road conditions, and frequent physical exertion. Must be knowledgeable of University policies and procedures. Must be able to handle multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy. Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community. Fluent in Microsoft Office Applications.
Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations)
Normal office environment, may travel some within the community when needed. May be required to lift normal office equipment and materials. Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information. Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication. Hearing ability for verbal communication/ conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing, reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, and prolonged sitting. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.
Requires a valid New Mexico driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to hire.
Must pass a Defensive Driving Course within 90days of hire.
