Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Men’s Basketball Coach administers the men’s basketball program and shares responsibility for overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of the intercollegiate athletic programs.
Job Description:
Administers the competitive men’s basketball program emphasizing integrity and the educational welfare of student-athletes, striving for excellence within the University's mission; and coordinates recruitment, prepares reports, and serves as a spokesperson for the team.
Works with the team to develop and report information related to the team roster, schedule, and results from the previous year and current season outlook; and collaborates on media relations to ensure accurate and timely dissemination of team updates and achievements.
Monitors communication platforms within the athletic department; and facilitates smooth coordination throughout the 12 to 24-month calendar on the composite communication platform.
Administers, manages, and leads the men’s basketball program in a manner that positively reflects on the image and reputation of the University at all times, aligning with the University's mission.
Assists the Director in evaluating the programmatic and operational effectiveness of the department, making regular operational and managerial adjustments as necessary; and advocates to senior leadership for major operational and managerial adjustments that have a significant division-wide impact.
Communicates problems, issues, and ideas for program improvement within the Athletic Department to the Director, and supports hiring search committees.
Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage inclusively and equitably with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Stays competent and up-to-date through self-directed professional development, establishing professional contacts with colleagues, attending workshops/courses, and completing relevant training opportunities.
Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars to maintain and develop knowledge and skills regarding current trends that can impact athletic programs and student-athletes, ensuring awareness of both beneficial and potentially harmful developments; supervises and evaluates the work of assistant men’s basketball coaches and other support staff; and provides strategic oversight for select athletic department units by executing tasks, evaluating functions and the efficiency of facility use.
Supervises paraprofessional staff; provides ongoing feedback to select department unit employees; completes the annual performance evaluations for each regular status and extended temporary staff; mutually sets goals and expectations for each staff; and resolves workplace conflicts promptly and seeks support from supervisor, Human Resources or Office of Equal Opportunity Program if needed.
Develops and disseminates rules related to the expected conduct of men’s basketball players when representing Gallaudet University, both on and off campus, and empowering our program members to engage in discussions about these rules; organizes and conducts all men’s basketball practice and skill development sessions; teaches player mechanics and techniques to the men’s basketball players, while also equipping them with tools for life; and ensures steps are taken to reduce the risks of injury.
Maintains a safe and healthy work environment; ensures professional development opportunities are provided to each regular status and extended temporary staff; and meets regularly with select department units through individual supervision meetings.
Assists the athletic leadership team with NCAA, United East Conference (UE), and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) conference business by participating in agreed meetings, discussing and reviewing legislation, new policies and procedures, and effectively communicating conference policies and procedures to all directly supervised sports; and ensures the department remains in full compliance with NCAA, the University, and United East rules.
Monitors the academic progress of men’s basketball players through communication and collaboration with Athletics Student Success, Academic Advising, the Tutorial Center, and First Year Seminar units, as well as through individual meetings with student-athletes.
Monitors, enforces, observes, communicates, and supports the University’s academic standards, requirements, and policies, including collaborating with Admissions, Financial Aid, and other academic and support services offices for men’s basketball players.
Monitors and ensures institutional compliance with policies and procedures of the NCAA and United East in all aspects surrounding the coaching of a team and actions as a member of the Athletics Department.
Collaborates with the Head Athletic Trainer to discuss well-being techniques and minimize injury risks, and partners with the head strength and conditioning coach to enhance body awareness, strength, and knowledge; informs and/or educates student-athletes of Gallaudet University and NCAA policies regarding the use of performance-enhancing drugs, alcohol and illegal substances; and ensures safety by instructing student-athletes on appropriate emergency action plans.
Develops men’s basketball event schedules; contacts Division III colleges and universities to coordinate the varsity sports calendar; arranges transportation, meals, lodging, etc., for officials; and confirms schedules with all related parties.
Organizes and conducts a team community service activity each year, allowing for coordination with the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) as needed; and collects Community Outreach participation within the Athletic Department to abide by the United East Conference expectations.
Supervises and secures contracts with external teams/organizations for the use of Athletic Department indoor facilities; prioritizes facility improvements to ensure the safety and participation of student-athletes; and contributes to long-range facility planning and design.
Participates in the university/NCAA/conference basketball meetings and committees.
Renews annual coaching membership and participates in University/NCAA/United East Conventions.
Assesses and monitors key secondary duties performance as assigned and evaluates the need to adjust priority needs.
Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
Demonstrates a genuine commitment to belonging in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree.
A minimum of four years of professional experience with coaching, athletic management, or a related field.
Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.

Strong commitment to the values of a liberal arts education and an understanding of the teacher/coach model in an NCAA Division III athletics program.

Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents, and groups.
Additional Job Details:
The incumbent must be able to work on weekends and in the evenings as needed.
The incumbent must be able to possess a First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.
