Title:Head Strength and Conditioning Coach
The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach is a full time position working in the Department of Athletics. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of strength and conditioning programming, providing significant contributions to the development of student-athletes through mentorship, guidance, community building, and a commitment to social justice.
This position is also responsible for the administration of policies related to strength and conditioning within varsity intercollegiate athletics, adhering to guidelines from Bates College, the NCAA, and NESCAC. The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach serves as an active and visible presence within the Department of Athletics, serving on committees, holding daytime office hours, and meeting recruits. The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach will have significant night and weekend commitments working with student-athletes and coaches. The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach reports to the Associate Athletic Director for Performance and Sports Medicine as part of the College’s Athletic Performance team.
Strength and Conditioning Program Vision and Leadership
Provides leadership, supervision, and development of a strength and conditioning program to support student-athletes in the areas of athletic competition skills and personal growth.
Serves as an integral partner in the furthering of a peak performance model of student-athlete development.
Develops and annually reviews/updates strength and conditioning policies and procedures.
Oversees and collaborates with the Athletic Performance staff to ensure safety in the design and implementation of fitness, nutrition, and conditioning programs to meet individual and athletic team needs.
Designs, organizes, implements, supervises, and administers multi-faceted training protocols and modalities that are orthopedically safe and physiologically sound for student-athletes.
Collaborates with head coaches to build strength and condition programs that meet the needs of their teams and individual student-athletes.
Oversees assistant strength and conditioning coaches and/or staff who are implementing strength and conditioning programs.
Provides training necessary through skills, strength, and conditioning to enable students to compete safely and competitively.
Administers and evaluates performance tests and assessments in partnership with head coaches to track student-athlete progress and determine effectiveness of training.
Management of the strength and conditioning facility, including inventory and regular-scheduled maintenance of equipment, while ensuring cleanliness to prevent disease transmission.
Training, management, and oversight of student-workers employed in the strength and conditioning facility.
Works closely with the Sports Medicine staff to ensure student-athlete safety.
Motivates students and staff to participate in an atmosphere of sportsmanship, professionalism, and respect among student-athletes, coaches, and other intercollegiate athletic teams.
Demonstrates interest in the academic progress, work, and achievement of student-athletes.
Understands the lifestyle of student-athletes in a highly competitive academic and athletic environment at a DIII institution.
Serves as a caring, empathetic, and engaged advisor and mentor to students-athletes, while having a knowledge of campus resources to refer student-athletes when necessary.
Engages in professional development with an eye towards gaining new knowledge in the realm of current best practices, successful coaching pedagogy, training/skill development, and risk management.
Ability and willingness to travel (by car, air, train, or bus) domestically and internationally as needed for competition.
Collaborates with coaches to schedule and conduct strength and conditioning sessions adhering to governing bodies such as Bates College, the NCAA, and NESCAC.
Maintains familiarity with all rules and regulations required by governing bodies for compliance.
Manages and remains accountable for expense control, administration of budget, and projected fiscal year needs.
Utilizes departmental software for appropriate tasks.
Coordinates all searches for qualified assistant strength and conditioning coaches with the approval of the Director of Athletics.
Trains, supervises, and accounts for assistant coach staff’s strength and conditioning roles and responsibilities.
Educates coaches as necessary and presents at staff meetings.
Administers annual performance evaluations for assistant strength and conditioning coaches.
Encourages student-athletes to participate in leadership opportunities within the Bates community, while also providing benefits to the campus and Lewiston/Auburn area.
Collaborates with athletic training personnel regarding student-athlete health and safety including, medical clearances, injury prevention, and rehabilitation of student-athletes.
Takes ownership of a shared process or program within the Department of Athletics.
Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required.
National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Certified Strength & Condition Specialist (CSCS), and/or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA), Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) required.
Minimum of two years of strength and conditioning coaching required and within an intercollegiate environment preferred.
Fundamental understanding of sport skills, training, and strategies for competition in a highly-competitive conference required.
Managing and maintaining a strength and conditioning facility, including scheduling, inventory, and equipment.
Demonstrated success in supporting students from underrepresented groups, including students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, first-generation-to-college students, and low-income students.
Commitment to equity and inclusion, and serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse community.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships with clientele such as students, staff, faculty, and co-workers.
Excellent communication (written, verbal, and listening) skills.
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.
Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
Strong organizational skills for successful documentation, planning, and execution.
Proficiency in basic data management systems and basic data management systems and basic computer software (e.g. Microsoft Word and Excel, Power Point, WordPress (website), Google Docs, email, and calendaring).
Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings, and other non-traditional schedules.
