Department/Location: Hay/Crafton Athletic Center/Elsah

Organizational Relationships: Reports to Director of Athletics, works closely with all head coaches to determine their needs as well as Athletic Trainer to help recovering athletes return to the competitive arena.

Summary: The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach develops systematic training programs for teams and individuals to help them prepare for and maintain fitness during their season. This work includes preparing and adjusting work out plans, teaching and training weight room staff, assigning weight room staff to supervise particular groups, maintaining a safe training environment, teaching proper lifting techniques, supervising athletes, maintaining contact with out of season athletes, and assessing athlete preparation. *Work Performed - Essential Duties:

Manages the intercollegiate strength and conditioning program in accord with NCAA, NSCA, conference, and Principia College rules:

• Trains coaches and student workers in proper lifting techniques.
• Works with the head coaches to set up training systems, pre-test and post-test.
• Design (or review) all off-season and pre-season training programs, as well as in season programs at the discretion of the head sport coach.
• Work with Athletic Training staff in proper return to play protocols.
• Participate in selection, installation, and maintenance of performance equipment.
• Conduct orientation meetings for student-athletes on such issues as facility use rule, the value of proper training and nutrition, and the dangers of banned substances.
• Coordinate time schedule for training and facility use with the Facility and Events Manager.
• Stay abreast of current strength and conditioning research.
• Staffs weight rooms.
• Teach PE classes.

Conducts a recruiting/student enrollment program:

• Assist with recruiting.
• Supports visits of potential athletes to campus.
• Contributes to student-athlete retention.

Effectively works with students in balancing their academic/athletic responsibilities:

• Supports coaches who are working with athletes who are experiencing academic or social difficulty and ensures that study and progress is not compromised by athletic activity.
• Advises Athletics Director of all issues pertaining to individual student challenges/problems.

Fully participates in professional advancement:

• Attends professional clinics and conferences.
• Keeps current in field by appropriate means available in print, electronically, or in person.
• Joins and contributes to professional organizations (i.e., serving on committees [conference, NCAA], holding office, and writing for periodicals)
• Makes continuous progress in obtaining and maintaining certifications.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Student of Christian Science
• Supportive of Principia’s mission, vision, and values as articulated here https://www.principia.edu/about/mission
• Bachelor’s Degree required, master’s preferred and/or working toward NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) or equivalent certification.
• Three-five years’ progressive collegiate experience preferred—will consider recent experience at high school, amateur, or professional levels.
• Demonstrated knowledge of current strength and conditioning methodology.
• Ability to couple vision and initiative with experience and consistency to effectively manage the intercollegiate strength and conditioning program.
• Ability to be an effective, professional role model for students.
• Demonstrated knowledge and support of Principia policies.
• Understands Division III philosophy and values.
