Description of Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics (AVPIA), the Head Tennis Coach plays a key role in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics (IA) and the broader campus community. Situated within the Division of Student Affairs, Intercollegiate Athletics at SUNY Oswego seeks, through the administration of 24 intercollegiate varsity sports, to advance the University's overall mission by preparing student-athletes to be leaders who live ethical and meaningful lives and build a better world as successful SUNY Oswego graduates.
The Head Tennis Coach at SUNY Oswego is responsible for the development and management of a successful NCAA Division III men's and women's tennis program. Consistent with SUNY Oswego's, the Division of Student Affairs, and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics' mission and strategic priorities, the head coach will provide visionary leadership for staff, coaches, and student-athletes, manage program budget and follow department cost containment measures, recruit and retain academically and athletically qualified student-athletes from geographically and demographically diverse populations, and ensure compliance with SUNYAC or affiliated conference, NCAA, and institutional policies. The head coach will collaborate with campus partners to ensure student-athlete well-being and success.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the overall leadership of the men's and women's tennis programs.
- Work within the mission of SUNY Oswego, Division of Student Affairs, and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to provide a competitive, unique, and memorable collegiate athletic experience for student-athletes.
- Support SUNY Oswego, Student Affairs, and IA's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Recruit and retain academically and athletically qualified student-athletes within the scope of the SUNYAC or affiliated conference, NCAA, and institutional guidelines, as well as reaching annual recruitment and retention goals.
- Develop a recruitment philosophy that reflects the recruitment of student-athletes from geographically and demographically diverse populations. Build positive relationships with faculty, staff, and campus partners to assist in the recruitment process.
- Organize all campus visits, including itineraries, academic meetings, campus and community tours, student-athlete hosts, lodging, meals, game tickets, and entertainment.
- Through recruitment and retention efforts, maintain a team roster of at least 10 student-athletes on both the women's and men's teams, as of the last day of the fall semester add/drop period.
- Coordinate with the department's compliance office to ensure student-athletes meet eligibility requirements and prepare all necessary documentation promptly.
- Encourage and promote academic excellence among student-athletes. Assist in implementing academic support services, including study halls, monitoring academic progress, and referring students to campus academic resources.
- Develop and sustain relationships with athletic alumni, high school and club coaches, and benefactors.
- Collaborate with the department's communication office to provide program updates and statistics to media and fans via press releases, media guides, game programs, website, and interviews.
- Establish and enforce communication regarding SUNY Oswego, IA, and team regulations concerning student conduct and behavior.
- Create a competitive program that fosters sportsmanship and responsible behavior both during and outside of competitions.
- Train players effectively on rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques.
- Manage all administrative aspects of the program, including budget preparation, practice and competition scheduling, travel arrangements, recruitment, and fundraising activities.
- Disclose all funds and gifts received and document associated expenditures. Accurately track donations and fundraising efforts, and monitor fundraising activities with prior approval from the AVPIA.
- Handle public relations activities involving faculty, students, parents, donors, alumni, and university administrators.
- Promote the sport at local, state, and national levels.
- Work closely with athletic trainers to ensure the safety and health of student-athletes, recognizing that the athletic trainer and team physician have the final say on return to practice and competition.
- Supervise assistant coaches, graduate assistants, volunteers, student coaches, and workers.
- Serve as game management administrator as directed by the AVPIA.
- Oversee athletic facilities, submitting work orders to the Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics for Internal Operations.
- Hold current certifications in First Aid and CPR, such as "First Aid for Coaches," "Responding to Emergencies," "Adult CPR," or equivalent.
- Maintain any required licenses or certifications necessary for employment.
- Consult with the AVPIA and serve on institutional committees as needed.
- Perform secondary duties assigned by the AVPIA.
- Contribute to the overall success of the intercollegiate athletics program by completing additional responsibilities as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITY TO COOPERATE:
Staff members must adhere to all rules and regulations of SUNY Oswego, SUNYAC or the affiliated conference, and the NCAA. Staff are expected to cooperate fully with official inquiries and provide honest, complete information regarding any involvement in or knowledge of rule violations.
Any individual found violating NCAA regulations shall face disciplinary or corrective actions in accordance with NCAA enforcement procedures, which may include suspension without pay or termination of employment for serious or repeated violations.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree at the time of application
- Minimum 1-3 years of collegiate coaching experience.
- Experience in developing and implementing diversity, equity, inclusion, wellness-related, and student success programming.
- Strong background in all aspects of leading a competitive men's and women's tennis program.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- NCAA Division III coaching experience preferred.
