ABOUT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY
Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.

Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard and naval reserve officers; Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support the Director of Athletics in all operations of the program in accordance with NAIA, California Pacific Conference and University rules, regulations and policies.
• Responsibilities include recruiting, all phases of competition preparation, including the organization of practices and player development.
• Monitor academic performance and maintain an environment that positively influences cadet-athletes’ educational goals and achievements.
• Duties include all aspects of the program’s recruiting, revenue generation and/or fundraising, planning and organizing of the team’s schedule in addition to other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Thorough knowledge of the sport; principles and methods for designing and teaching individuals; recruitment methods and techniques.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Title IX and NAIA rules and regulations, CSU policies, procedures, programs, educational codes, applicable state and federal laws.
• Ability to lead and guide student-athletes; foster an environment to promote student-athlete well-being, academic success and personal development.
• Experience developing and managing a sports program and administering a budget.
• Must possess the ability to work in a diverse and equity-minded environment.
• Strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes, coaching staff, donors, parents, and support staff.
• Ability to take initiative and independently play, organize, coordinate and execute work in various situations that involve numerous and diverse demands.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Four years of soccer coaching experience at the collegiate level.
• Fundraising background.
• Community engagement activities involving athletic team(s).
• Current first aid, CPR and AED certification.
• Valid California Driver’s License and clean driving record.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

• Coach student-athletes individually, and in groups to demonstrate game techniques; develop game strategy; design conditioning programs; administer camp programs, clinics and tournaments.
• Recruiting, scouting, evaluation and correspondence with prospective recruits.
• Organize contracts and schedule of competition.
• Monitor the conduct and academic progress of student-athletes.
• Design and execute community engagement, fundraising, public relations and marketing events and activities for the program.
• Coordinate all camp programs involving the program.
• Student Engagement and Academic Success Liaison for the department: Make appropriate professionals for study skills workshops, tutoring, supplemental instruction and disability services.
• Serving on various department, campus, California Pacific Conference and NAIA committees, as assigned.
• Teach the Physical Education Intercollegiate Soccer class.

SALARY RANGE

• Hiring salary is anticipated at $4,939-$6,067 per month, commensurate with education and experience.
• CSU Salary Range: $4,939-$9,175 per month.

The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

• This role requires regular hours working outdoors with routine sun exposure.
• The individual in this position may be exposed to extreme heat, cold and/or rain, in addition to working on uneven or slippery surfaces.
• Typical classroom and office environments involve a two-story building with elevator access.
