The Hobart and William Smith Head Squash Coach is responsible for the organization and management of both the intercollegiate men’s and women’s squash teams.
The HWS Head Squash Coach will be responsible for teaching and coaching student-athletes for successful competition; monitoring and supporting student-athletes’ academic success; recruiting; civic engagement; planning and managing budgets and schedules; fundraising; and developing positive alumni/alumnae and parent relations. Hobart and William Smith coaches are expected to utilize an ethical approach to training, competing, mentoring, and recruiting.

Essential Responsibilities:
Teaching and Coaching:
Maintain an exemplary standard of conduct, which reflects the highest level of professionalism and good judgment.
Provide a teaching and learning environment that is nurturing, intellectual and supportive of individual differences.
Develop strategies and techniques for all phases of the sport to best prepare the team for competitive situations.
Prepare, implement, and evaluate practice and match day plans that are effective for the sport and congruent with team/individual ability.
Develop and employ a team philosophy that is supportive of the educational mission of the college and the athletic department.
Direct athletes, coaches, and support staff to conduct themselves in such ways that bring credit to their team and HWS.
Counseling and Advisement of Student-Athletes:
Develop and maintain effective communication with team members.
Set high standard of ethical and moral conduct.
Reinforce academic success as a priority.
Monitor academic progress through communication with the Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics & Recreation, Associate Athletic Director for Compliance, and the Deans.
Encourage student-athletes to foster a positive relationship with their faculty, the deans, and all support staff.
Recruiting:
Articulate and implement a recruiting plan consistent with the Colleges mission.
Cultivate a recruiting network.
Maintain the department’s recruiting contact management system.
Recruit student-athletes that coincide with the academic profile of HWS students.
Maintain open communication with other Hobart and William Smith coaches regarding shared prospects.
Be knowledgeable about admissions and financial aid processes.
Professional Development:
Maintain active membership in professional sport organizations.
Pursue formal and informal educational opportunities.
Participate in department leadership seminars.
Civic Engagement
Promote the sport and department in area communities.
Establish and maintain a positive relationship with interested segments of the community (e.g., youth groups, civic organizations, media).
Program Management:
Comply with institutional and departmental policies.
Be knowledgeable of and comply with all NCAA, Liberty League, CSA and conference rules and regulations.
Supervise, mentor, and evaluate assistant coaching staff.
Work collaboratively with other department members and HWS staff (e.g., peer coaches, support staff, athletic trainers, athletic communications, admissions, human resources)
Develop a competitive schedule.
Establish a sport budget in collaboration with the Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics & Recreation.
Effectively manage the sport program within the budget allocation.
Responsibly manage equipment, uniforms, and facilities
Work collaboratively with HWS Field House staff on shared facility use.
Plan and oversee all sport fundraising activities.
Maintain appropriate coach-athlete relationships with athletes.
Develop a positive relationship with alumni, alumnae and parents of current, former, and prospective student-athletes.
Operational Team Responsibilities (approximately 30% of full-time responsibilities):
Oversee use of the HWS Squash Facility in coordination with the Director of Recreation
Assist with special events (i.e., Hall of Fame, Heron Hall of Honor)
Assist with department initiatives.
Represent the department at college events on and off campus.
Represent the department on campus committees.
Other Information:
This is a full-time, 10-month, benefits-eligible position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Salary range: $60- $70k dependant upon experience level.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree is preferred. A minimum of four years of collegiate squash and/or high-level coaching experience required.
The candidates should have proven organizational and management skills as well as a recognizable commitment to student growth and academic achievement.
An overall knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations is required.
The successful applicant must be a person of integrity, high ethical standards, have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and have a commitment to teamwork.
Competence with technology resources and a current U.S. driver’s license are vital to fulfilling the responsibilities of this position.
The candidate must be willing to work nights and weekends.
