This position in the Sports Medicine Department in the University of Maryland Health Center will work within the Intercollegiate Athletic Department. The position will report directly to the Clinical Coordinator for Sports Medicine. The function of the Insurance and Medical Appointment Coordinator maintains and coordinates records of health insurance, the status of any insurance claims, and schedules appointments for all student-athletes in physical therapy and support the Clinical Coordinator.
Coordinate all activities related to filing student-athlete medical claims, ensure appropriate authorization (e.g. specifically for physical therapists), track current student-athlete insurance information, maintain up-to-date computer records, obtain medical releases, track insurance payments, assign accounts for payment, and collaborate with the
UHC
billing department.
Act as insurance liaison between providers, parents, student-athletes, and the insurance carrier as it concerns benefits coordination, payment of claims, and handling of all disputed athletic claims.
Schedule physical therapy sessions.
Coordinate third-party billing for athletic training and physical therapy services rendered in the athletic training room.
Assist in obtaining and verifying insurance data on all athletes, as well as determining eligibility for student health insurance.
Support the new 2023
NCAA
mandated cost reimbursement for out-of-pocket medical expenses during a student-athlete’s playing career for athletically related injuries for a minimum of two years following graduation or completion of athletics experience.
Support the student-athlete exit process for the new 2024
NCAA
Post-eligibility Injury Insurance Program.
Assist with student check-in for medical visits.
Serve as back up for Clinical Coordinator
Special Projects as assigned.
Education:
High School Diploma or
GED
Experience:
3 years experience providing administrative support.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
General knowledge of and skill in the practical application of generally accepted office practices and procedures.
Ability to communicate effective both orally and in writing.
Ability to proofread and edit written documents.
Skill in various computer software packages, such as word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation programs, Internet, email and calendaring software.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to interact effectively with internal and external parties in a courteous and efficient manner. Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and execute multiple and continuing assignments with general instructions.
Other:
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Preferences:
Computer skills and aptitude for utilizing database and word processing software.
Prior experience with insurance coding and claims processing
essential.
Medical Assistant credential.
Medical office experience.
Ability to communicate clearly with the public either by phone or in person. This position requires strong customer service orientation and a willingness to negotiate payment of insurance claims.
Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.
Ability to operate office equipment such as a calculator, computer terminal, photocopier, and fax machine.
Ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with staff, student-athletes, and parents.
Comply with

, Big Ten, and University rules and regulations including participation in rules compliance education.
Ability to work onsite 5 days a week in a medical office setting.
