Job Description
The Associate Athletic Trainer oversees assigned sports, provides injury prevention, completes medical evaluations and provides treatment and rehabilitation to student-athletes. This position works directly with student-athletes to refer them to the proper medical personnel for continuing care. They work cooperatively with staff, coaches and department personnel, and assist other staff Athletic Trainers in the management of all athletic team medical coverage. They also help supervise and mentor graduate assistant athletic training staff.
Oversight of assigned sports programs. Serves as the primary athletic trainer for assigned sports programs.
Assist in hiring, training, supervising and managing a team of certified Athletic Trainers (graduate, undergraduate and interns) in order to deliver educational and health care services to student-athletes. Develops programming for SCSU student-athletes, staff, and coaches related to injury prevention, injury rehabilitation, mental health, lifetime health, nutrition, sleep and other current topics in sports medicine.
Assist sport program coaches and strength and conditioning staff in modifying exercises and practices and developing rehab in the best interest of student athlete health. Develop relationships with local health providers and serves as the main contact with SCSU’s team physician(s) and providers to advocate for best possible medical treatment.
Maintains secure health records for all student-athletes, including eligibility clearances and injuries. File claims forms and supply documentation for insurance management. Maintains current injury evaluation and rehabilitation documentation.
Assist coaches and strength and conditioning staff in developing pre-habilitation programs and modifying existing conditioning/weight programs for injured athletes. Work in concert with coaches and strength and conditioning staff to identify sport specific programs. Work directly with student-athletes to ensure conditioning/weight programs are adequate.
Maintain clear communication with doctors, coaches, parents and athletes to provide the best possible medical treatment protocols. Work directly with student-athletes and parents to navigate insurance and facilitate necessary medical appointment scheduling.
Supervise Athletic Training Students in the ATEP’s clinical practicum.
Perform other duties as necessary to build support for and add value to the objectives and goals of the University, department of Athletics, and Athletic Training/Sports Medicine unit.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training
• One year of experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer in the public or private sector in the areas of secondary, collegiate or professional athletics.
• NATA-BOC certification, Current or eligible for MN Medical Board – Athletic Training Licensure
• Current CPR and AED certifications required
• Knowledge and skills required by the NATA-BOC to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Certified Athletic Trainer which include but are not limited to; pathology of injuries and illness, orthopedic clinical examination and diagnosis, acute care of injury and illness, pharmacology, therapeutic modalities, conditioning and rehabilitative exercise, medical conditions and disabilities, nutritional aspects of injury and illness, psychosocial intervention and referral, health care administration and professional development and responsibility.
• Must exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills; establish effective goal oriented relationships with coaches, staff and student-athletes and to speak in groups of various sizes
• Demonstrate clinical and administrative effectiveness and ability to advise faculty, coaches and students.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with the local medical community and demonstrate knowledge of insurance requirements and procedures.
• Must be available for overnight and weekend travel.
Preferred Qualification
• Master’s degree
• One to three years of professional experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer in the public or private sector in the areas of secondary, collegiate or professional athletics.
Other Requirements
Position requires significant overnight travel with various sport teams and must be able to transfer/carry equipment up to 50 pounds to various venues.
This position requires significant weekend and evening assignments, and must be on-call throughout the year.
