As part of a holistic strategic effort to support at-risk student athletes, this position provides individualized student support programming efforts that centers around learning strategies and academic skills. The Lead Learning Specialist functions to ensure assigned students understand assignments in their courses, help them to develop an organizational system that will facilitate success in their courses, assists students in areas where there are some cognitive deficiencies, and helps coordinate with assigned academic counselors, tutors, and other Student Athlete Academic Support Team members to guarantee at-risk student athletes receive proper academic assistance.
Serve as the primary learning specialist for a specific group of student-athletes.
Provide academic support for academically at-risk student-athletes on an individualized basis with an emphasis on academic skill development.
Ensure assigned students understand assignments in their courses, help them to develop an organizational system that will facilitate success in their courses, assist students in areas where there are cognitive deficiencies, and help coordinate with assigned assistant learning specialists, mentors and tutors to make sure they are receiving proper academic assistance.
Implements and develops certain initiatives that promote equitable learning environments for all student-athletes.
Manages a high-impact educational assistant program. Follows best practices and current research regarding strategies around student success, learning resources, and student support.
After each appointment, the Lead Learning Specialist will log a report in JSU Navigate detailing what took place during each session to ensure compliance with JSU, CUSA, and NCAA rules and regulations.
Provide quality and report any potential and actual JSU, CUSA, and/or NCAA infractions to the Vice Provost for Student Success and Senior Executive for the Student Athlete Experience
Ensure compliance with the NCAA, CUSA, and institutional rules and regulations regarding academic advising and support.
Provide supervision and mentoring to the learning specialist. This includes regular one on one meetings, guidance, professional development opportunities, and teamwork.
Other learning specialist and academic support programming duties as assigned.
Regular bi-weekly evening and occasional weekend work.
Regular work hours for JSU are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. This position will qualify for and will require flexible work hours
Administer the Nelson Denny and other screening assessments to identified underprepared and/or at risk student athletes.
If necessary, coordinate psychoeducational assessments for student athletes with identified needs with Vice Provost for Student Success and Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Student Services.
Master's Degree in Education, Psychometry, Psychology, Sports Psychology, English, Math, Linguistics, or related field
2 years experience with NCAA Division I underprepared or at risk student athletes or related experience
3 or more years of experience as a learning specialist with NCAA Division I student athletes.
