The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a LEARNING SPECIALIST to coordinate all aspects of the athletic academic mentoring program. To assess student-athletes’ academic abilities. To ensure successful matriculation through the university course of study by athletes who are gifted learners or those who exhibit learning difficulties/disabilities. To maintain confidential files for student-athlete diagnostic testing and academic performance. To adhere to all institution, conference, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations. To report all NCAA violations in accordance with institutional, conference and NCAA policies and guidelines.

 Responsibilities:

1. Provides academic support services to a caseload of student-athletes assigned by the athletic academic counselors as well as student-athletes diagnosed with learning disabilities or learning deficiencies.
2.  Serves as the direct coordinator of the Building Blazers Tutorial and Mentoring program and is responsible for the hiring, training, scheduling and maintaining of staff.
3.  Assesses and evaluates student-athletes’ academic needs using research and knowledge gained in the field to create a sustained and individualized support system for academic success and helps develop independent learners.
4.  Monitors the progress of at-risk student-athletes.
5. Provides training to academics and athletics staff on the academic needs of student-athletes, including tutors, and mentors.
6. Assist in the instruction of Summer Bridge programming for incoming Freshman and transfer student-athletes.
7. Works flexible schedules, including early mornings and late evening hours and weekends.

(Annual Salary:  $43,890  - $46,000)

 

Qualifications

 

Bachelors’ degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirements
