As a member of a progressive Gossett Student-Athlete Center (
GSAC
) Academic Services Unit, the Learning Specialist will manage and support a caseload of at-risk student-athletes, specialize in working with students from a variety of sports. This individual will be responsible for conducting one-on-one academic meetings with a caseload of students, teach learning strategies and address academic needs. Specific duties will also include but are not limited to active involvement in the Learning Services Working Group, development of creative ideas to best support at-risk student-athletes, and when necessary, acting as a liaison to faculty, administrators, and coaches regarding student-athlete academic matters. The Learning Specialist should adhere to all University of Maryland, Big Ten Conference, and
NCAA
rules and regulations. This position will work cooperatively with Athletic Academic Counselors and Student Success colleagues on campus to assess academic needs and enhance student-athlete academic skill development. The Learning Specialist will work collaboratively with
GSAC
staff to organize and execute evaluations for all incoming student-athletes and, when needed; act as a liaison to the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services on campus; and perform all other related duties as assigned.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Counseling, or a related academic field.
Experience:
One (1) to (3) three years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population, excellent communication and organizational skills.
Must maintain strict adherence to
NCAA
and Big Ten Conference rules and regulations affecting the
GSAC
(Gossett Student-Athlete Center),
ICA
(Intercollegiate Athletics), and University.
Preferences:
Master’s degree preferred along with experience working in academic support services in athletics.
Experience in teaching learning strategies and other study skill instructional
techniques.
Experience working with various components of the Retain software.
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

The scope of the position requires occasional weekend and evening work (Non-standard work hours) as well as some travel. While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee operates a computer and other office devices such telephones, copy machines, fax machines, etc; Constantly moves about the facility and campus; constantly communicates via telephone, email and in-person with others to exchange accurate information. Standing, walking, kneeling/crouching, balancing and lifting up to 25 pounds.
