The learning specialist is responsible for providing intensive, essential learning strategies for student-athletes through proactive, early, sustained, and individualized support. Areas of focus include, but are not limited to, study strategies, time management skills, and identification of at-risk student-athletes. Reports to Assistant Athletic Director, Academic and Student Services.
Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: Conduct one-on-one meetings with a caseload of student-athletes. Utilize teaching skills and knowledge of student personal and cognitive development to design and implement a learning support system individualized to specific student-athletes.Identify and properly refer individuals struggling with learning disabilities, emotional and/or mental wellbeing.Prepare summary reports and updates for athletic academic counselors.Organize and implement student-athlete academic development workshops and seminars.Perform related duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and three months experience in the area of student development, teaching, collegiate athletics and/or academic support services. License/Certification: Knowledge Of: Desktop software (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite) Skill In: Written and verbal communication and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff and university constituents * Ability To: Exercise sound judgment and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and accordance to FERPA guidelines *Establish and interact collaboratively and effectively with staff, student-athletes, coaches and administrators *Develop a learning support system individualized to specific student-athletes *Work evenings and weekends *
Master's degree in special education, counseling, education, educational psychology or similar field preferred.

Light work-Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.
