Job Description:
Job Summary:
The assistant men's basketball coach is responsible for assisting in planning and administering all aspects of the men's basketball program and reports to the Athletic Director and Head Men's Basketball Coach The assistant coach is responsible for helping maintain the integrity of the program, helping create an exemplary student-athlete concept, and assisting in the personal development of the student-athletes. The assistant coach should model the NAIA Champions of Character & OLLU's core values and follow all rules and regulations pertaining to the NAIA and OLLU. The assistant coach is expected to support the head coach and their efforts to develop unity and is expected to inform the head coach concerning all individual and team concerns.
Performance Evaluation Metrics:
Must attend 70% of practices/workouts.
Must attend 50% of home games.
Must assist with travel on 3 trips
Essential Functions:
Responsible for providing coaching and administrative assistance to the Head Coach in all areas of the Basketball program.
Assist with all practices at the discretion of the FT coaches.
Assists with scouting and recruitment of quality student-athletes.
Monitors academic progress and eligibility status of student-athletes
Participates in public relations activities and fundraising.
Ensures the highest professional standards and behavior with regard to adherence to NAIA rules and regulations.
Advise student-athletes regarding rules and regulations related to financial aid and eligibility.
Counsel team members in academic, disciplinary, personal matters while adhering to FERPA guidelines.
Monitor academic progress and eligibility status for student-athletes in class and study hall.
Participates in annual continuing education programs regarding NAIA rules.
Coordinates and assist administration with home and visiting team's game day activities (schedule practices, setup and breakdown of equipment, personnel, field set up, etc.).
Works with Sports Information Director to communicate the accomplishments and endeavors of the team, both individuals and as a whole.
Submits transportation requests and required travel documentation for the team to the Athletic Director as required.
Assists in special events and tournaments, championships, fundraisers, and/or clinics to include, but not limited to, major fundraisers, camps, and/or clinics.
Subscribes and adheres to the NAIA Coaches Code of Conduct.
Adhere and promote the NAIA Champions of Character student development.
Attend all scheduled meetings.
Assist in enrolling student-athletes according to OLLU Admissions policies and standards.
Adhere to Residence Life procedures to securing housing accommodations.
Communicate effectively with all academic/faculty advisors, financial aid, business office, registrar and other university personnel.
Additional Responsibilities:
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of fundamentals, technical aspects, and strategy for assigned sport.
Ability to recruit and retain qualified athletes and to facilitate timely progress toward graduation.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to learn, apply and adhere to NAIA rules and regulations.
Ability to interact well with officials, coaches, parents, media, and the public.
Ability to work with students of all faiths and mentor student-athletes.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Excellent communication, organizational, and administrative skills.
Ability to travel and work flexible hours, including weekend and evening hours
Requirements:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree preferred.
A minimum of three years of coaching experience, preferably in a college, travel club, or UIL setting, in the assigned sport is preferred.
