GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

The Athletics Physical Therapist position is a 10-month, full-time workload in line with the undergraduate student-athlete calendar (mid-July to mid-May as set annually by the Director of Sports Medicine). The Athletics Physical Therapist will operate the PT clinic for Pacific student-athletes referred through the sports medicine team including the team physician and orthopedic surgeon.

Opportunities to work in Pacific University run clinics during off months may be available as well.

JOB DUTIES:

• The successful candidate will practice with a high degree of autonomy in an established sports medicine clinic within the department of Athletics.
• Student-athlete patients represent a broad range of diagnoses and conditions within the 24 varsity and 5 JV sports within the department.
• Plan, prepare and carry out individually designed programs of physical treatment to maintain, improve or restore physical functioning, alleviate pain and prevent physical dysfunction in student-athletes returning to practice and competition.
• Perform and document an initial exam, evaluating the data to identify problems and determine a diagnosis prior to intervention.
• Instruct student-athlete patients in treatment procedures to be continued at home.
• Confer with the student-athlete patient, medical practitioners (including athletic trainers) and appropriate others to plan, implement and assess the intervention program and return to activity timeline.
• Document prognosis, treatment, response, and progress in student-athlete patient's electronic health records.
• Collaborate with the Director of Sports Medicine/ Head Athletic Trainer and the internal sports medicine team to determine return to play timeline and medical clearance for competition and practice.
• The schedule may include hours outside of an 8:00 am - 5:00 pm schedule.
• Adhere to the American Physical Therapy Association – Code of Ethics for the Physical Therapist.
• Direct and supervise supportive personnel, assessing their competence, delegating specific tasks to them and establishing channels of communication.
• Develop and cultivate relationships with sports medicine team.
• Assist with scheduling student-athlete patient visits and checking patients in.
• Assist with maintenance of the clinic.
• Additional opportunities include: clinical education for Pacific University physical therapy students.

JOB SCOPE:

The incumbent will follow established practices and procedures. Duties are performed as expected from an independent practitioner and work is checked or verified visually, orally and in writing on a frequent basis. Decisions are made within specific operational instructions and consistent with the Pacific University Healthcare system guidelines.

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY:

This position is not supervisory in nature.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

• The ideal candidate has a doctorate in physical therapy and board certification
• 3-5 years of experience in sports medicine is preferred.
• Applicants must possess an Oregon Physical Therapist License or be eligible for licensure in Oregon.
• Prior athletics and orthopedics clinical practice experience in outpatient setting is preferred.
• Maintain current certification in CPR/BLS at the provider level (AHA certification is recommended).
• An understanding of the collegiate athletic experience or collegiate playing experience is desired.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & BEHAVIORS:

• Ability to work independently and excellent team member skills to communicate and work well with administrators, students, faculty, staff and the public appropriately.
• Technologically adept and able to learn new computer applications rapidly
• Experience with electronic health records, including developing workflows and optimization
• Demonstrated knowledge of billing practices and ability to work collaboratively with billing team.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, ask questions and assist to complete tasks.
• Maintains proper appearance and personal conduct for the employee’s particular job.
• Demonstrated experience in customer service and customers of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
• Knowledge of current office software systems, office practices, and office equipment operations.
• Intermediate experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and the internet.
• Intermediate experience using an electronic health record.
• Demonstrates confidentiality regarding information pertaining to all students, faculty and staff, and maintain strong adherence to principles such as FERPA, HIPAA and other laws.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The Athletic Physical Therapy Clinic is an outpatient practice. Vacation and time off schedules are particular to this position and school/athletics calendar optimization as approved by Director of Sports Medicine.

Essential Functions: All Essential Functions should be able to be completed in highly complex and distracting environments and within time frames consistent with current clinical practice.
