The Psychologist Embedded in Athletics is a member of the Athletics Student Services team as well as a staff member of MSU Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS). This position will have dual oversight/supervision by both CPS and Athletics. The Psychologist Embedded in Athletics will follow NCAA Mental health Best Practices Guidelines and be licensed as a psychologist in the state of Montana. They also must have experience providing direct mental health counseling services. They will be housed within Athletics and work directly with the student-athlete population and MSU Athletics Department Coaches, Administration and Staff.
Provide education to the athletics department (i.e. trainers, sports medicine providers, administrators, coaches, athletes, etc) about the role of the embedded mental health clinician. This should include limitations to the role, with a specific focus on protecting client confidentiality in all settings as outlined in MT law and relevant ethics codes. This includes securing releases of information as needed to coordinate services. Provide direct counseling services to student athletes, in a private, confidential space either at the Athletics facility or CPS, under CPS clinical policies and procedures. Clinical documentation must be completed within CPS policy and exist within the secure health record system at CPS (Titanium Schedule). Coordinate and vet outside providers offering mental performance or other services to athletics that may be related to mental health. Consultation support to coaches, administrators, trainers, and other Athletics staff which is focused on mental performance and mental health issues. Provide education, training, and intervention with athletic teams related to mental health and performance issues. Develop and implement pre-participation procedures related to mental health (e.g. CCAPS-Screen). If Athletics continues with a Bobcat Wellness Team, the role of the embedded clinician would be strictly consultative and will not be in a position to share confidential information. Serve as the Big Sky Conference Mental Health Liaison for MSU Athletics. Continually be in NCAA Compliance and current on NCAA Standards/requirements specific to mental health legislation. Other duties as assigned by CPS and/or Athletics. Coordination with CPS: Attend clinical team meetings at CPS. Engage in clinical supervision with the CPS Director and subject matter consultation with the Assistant Director for Clinical Services. Chart documentation and scheduling is conducted within Titanium Schedule and is fully integrated with CPS policies and procedures. The embedded mental health clinician-athletics emphasis is unable to provide direct clinical services to all athletes who may need clinical support. This role works closely with CPS providers to refer athletes to other qualified CPS providers (perhaps to work with a provider with a specialized area of focus or specific identity factors) or to off-campus providers if they need a higher level of care. Provide training and education to CPS staff on athletics processes as well as consultation on best practices for clinical services for student athletes. Must maintain annual continued education credits in the field of sport and performance psychology, as well as other CE requirements for clinical licensure.
Doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology from APA accredited program. Licensed in MT as a psychologist within one year of hire (i.e. complete all supervised hours and take the EPPP). Clinical experience working with adults including crisis intervention. Experience providing clinical consultation services to student athletes and athletic departments. Demonstrated sensitivity and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Experience providing sport psychology services to student athletes and athletic departments.
