Nature of Responsibilities:

The CAPS Psychology Intern serves a one-year (12 months) apprenticeship in a professional psychology internship setting. The internship is a prerequisite to the granting of the doctoral degree. This position is a shared position with the Athletics Department, Psychology Program. Internship will work 20 hours at CAPS and 20 hours at Athletics; however, position is funded through the Athletic Program.

Specific Duties:

Services provided by an intern include: psychotherapy and personal counseling, vocational/personality assessment, career counseling, campus consultations, psychological research and psycho-education programming. Interns participate in the development and leadership of seminars and workshops that assess students in areas such as career and life planning, interpersonal communication, eating disorders, diversity issues, optimism and stress management. An intern receives individual supervision and maintains a professional caseload. Supervision, training seminars and team and case conferences are a part of training experience. This position also works in the Athletic Department halftime working with Duke athletes providing services. The internship year is coordinated and supervised by licensed psychologists and other licensed mental health professionals.

Specific Skill and Competencies:

Qualifications for the internship include: all coursework for the doctorate completed in clinical psychology or counseling psychology. A minimum of one year of supervised practicum experience prior to the internship is expected.
