POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Psychotherapist/Athletic Counselor
OSU Sports Medicine/Athletics
Position Summary
The Psychotherapist/Athletic Counselor position provides athletic counseling services for OSU Sports Medicine to OSU varsity student-athletes. The reporting unit for this position is in Sports Medicine. Responsibilities include diagnosis and treatment of patients, education, and collaboration with staff, and delivery of presentations to the Ohio State athletics community. The psychotherapist/athletic counselor must be competent in evidence-based clinical skills as well as cognitive and interpersonal skills. The psychotherapist/athletic counselor is expected to practice within the established Medical Center and standards of practice (policies, procedures, protocols), and adhere to key results areas of the Medical Center. Required Qualifications: Master of Social Work or Counseling from an accredited graduate school; State of Ohio Social Work licensure (LSW or LISW) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or equivalent education/experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
Athletic Counseling: 60% of time
Provides psychotherapeutic interventions to assist student-athlete to cope with mental health disorders, relationship problems, performance issues, and related environmental, educational, and vocational concerns.
Identifies present and potential student-athlete psychosocial problems and implements plans for problem resolution.
Maintains quality documentation for medical records which may include (but not limited to): assessment, consult notes, consents, and releases of information in accordance with regulatory bodies.
Consults with supervisor and other medical specialists to enhance student-athlete outcomes.
Wellness / Prevention: 40% of time
Visits practices, competitions, training rooms, and athletic facilities regularly.
Delivers performance consultation to teams.
Delivers psychoeducational programming to student-athletes.
Participates in interdisciplinary student-athlete care conferences and team meetings.
Works collaboratively with the student-athlete care team to ensure comprehensive care.May participate in staff meetings, in-services, continuing education programs, research activities, CQI and performance improvement activities.
Participates in 2 hours a month of peer supervision.
Organizational Expectations
Practices according to the policies and procedures of the Medical Center. Adheres to the Intensive Caring Value statements as demonstrated through positive patient/guest relations, positive and effective interactions with staff, and formulating and meeting developmental goals.
Reports to the Lead Sport Psychologist for Ohio State Athletics, Head Team Physician, and Director of Sports Medicine.
Minimum Qualifications
For Hire: Master of Social Work or Counseling from an accredited graduate school; State of Ohio Social Work licensure (LSW or LISW) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or equivalent education/experience.
Ongoing: Maintains all credentialing requirements.

OSU Sports Medicine is an inter-professional program whose mission is to improve the lives of active individuals through innovation in research, education, and patient care. Clinical and outreach services consist primarily of Primary Care and Orthopedic Sports Medicine, general Family Practice/GIM and Orthopedics, Sports and Orthopedic Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Sport Psychology, Sport Psychiatry, Nutrition and other multidisciplinary programs to meet the needs of an active patient population.
