This role is a dual role requiring both front-end product sourcing (traditionally referred to as buying) as assigned and assisting the product team in demand planning, margin production, and life cycle management. While it is expected this individual will perform buying, a portion of their time will also be spent analyzing data and building forecast models for the entire product team. This role supports the five (5) sales channels, merchandising, and marketing that make up BYU Retail Services. This position requires technical skills using computerized systems, strong negotiation skills, the ability to discern product trends, project management of development timelines, and the use of data driven software systems. In order to succeed, this individual will need to apply both financial and business acumen, conduct product trend analysis, and work to maximize margin and profitability. This individual will be responsible for maintaining inventory levels that support the aforementioned sales channels while limiting obsolescent capital risk. This individual will establish and maintain positive working relationships with the Athletic Department on campus including Football, Basketball, Marketing, Corporate Sponsorships, the Cougar Club, and Licensing to support the aims of the Athletic Department and the BYU Store.
Essential Functions
1. Selecting, Purchasing, Pricing, and Life Cycle Management of Products
a. Works with vendors to identify products that will both excite and support the customer base.
b. Works with manufacturer "end to end" to develop private brand emblematic products under the Brigham Supply Company brand including creating the product roadmap and emblematic private label strategy.
c. Select merchandise that helps drive customer demand. Sets initial product forecast levels based on the anticipated demand.
d. Regularly consults with customers and sales floor employees, works with vendors, reads industry publication, attends buying shows, and utilizes the Internet in order to seek out new products that will be of interest to our customers.
e. Utilizes ERP (currently NetSuite) system for all product activity including procurement, demand planning, pricing, item set up, min/max levels, and signs/submits purchase orders generated for product acquisition.
f. Responsible for establishing initial retail product pricing.
g. Negotiates honest, trusting, partnerships with vendor suppliers that will work to the benefit of Retail Services and our customer base.
h. Establishes a yearly budget in order to build sales and achieve profitability goals.
i. Ensures product selected for resell has proper copyright clearance as needed.
j. When necessary, helps facilitate special orders and customer service questions.
2. Forecasting, Planning, Product Lifecyle Management
a. Creates and analyzes data relating to forecasting, demand planning, and establishing open to buy to maximize ROI across all product categories.
b. Meets regularly with individual category managers to review specific inventory and sales forecasts for all products.
c. Shares product information with the five (5) sales channels, merchandising, and marketing to develop a data driven business strategy to improve performance.
d. Effectively balances and controls inventory levels in relation to sales so as to achieve budgeted inventory turns.
e. Maintains inventory levels within the prescribed open to buy levels and supports the organization's cash flow strategies.
f. Develops product exit strategies as needed to minimize margin impact and inventory obsolescence risks.
g. Oversee vendor returns for defective and damaged product to minimize inventory risk and shrinkage.
3. Supporting Sales Channels and Other Internal Partners
a. Participates in regularly scheduled meetings with Sales Channel Leaders to help identify product needs and trends.
b. Communicates new product information to each of the sales channel teams to assist in building product awareness.
c. Collaborates with Sales Channel Leaders in setting pricing strategies that balance demand and maximum margin performance.
d. Works with the Merchandising Team to develop effective product displays and placement.
e. Works with the Marketing Team to develop effective promotions and marketing campaigns
f. Allocates product across sales channels to maximize item profitability and ROI for day to day and event sales.
Education/Experience
Minimum education/experience required:
· 5 years previous experience in retail industry relating to product acquisition and management
· 3 years previous experience in demand planning and product forecasting
Preferred:
· Bachelor's Degree in business, accounting, marketing, supply chain, or finance
· 7-10 years previous experience in retail sales relating to product acquisition, development, forecasting and management
Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:
Required:
· Basic mathematics: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing
· Computer skills: utilization of ERP (enterprise resource planning) software to conduct trend and data analysis
· Strong leadership and collaborative skills and the ability to communicate effectively with other teams, departments, and vendors.
Preferred:
· Knowledge and understanding of the related product areas
· Business acumen relating to Net Sales, Discount Strategies, Gross Margin, Inventory Turns, Forecasting, and Demand Planning
