Senior Learning Specialist
Undergraduate Education | Student Athlete Support Services
Job Description:
The Senior Learning Specialist in Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO) provides a supportive learning environment for student-athletes by implementing educational measures targeting those students who are determined to need a high level of academic support. Works independently and prioritizes and completes ongoing tasks following established departmental, Ohio State University, Conference, and NCAA guidelines and university policies. Specializes in working with students from a variety of sports, including neurodivergent students and students from underserved communities. Works collaboratively to develop, implement, and monitor student-athletes’ individualized academic support plans, which may include weekly learning specialist one-on-one meetings, objective-based study hall, and academic tutoring support for assigned student-athletes. Supports caseload of student-athletes utilizing a self-regulated approach that promotes active learning strategies to develop and enhance critical thinking, close reading, and academic writing. This individual will be responsible for conducting one-on-one academic meetings, teaching learning strategies, and addressing academic needs. Specific duties beyond the day-to-day work with assigned caseload of students will also include but are not limited to active involvement on the educational services team coordinating summer programming, assisting with tutoring needs, and leading conversations on adjustment of support for students. Develops and implements learning interventions and study strategies in the areas of time management, critical thinking, reading, and writing, taking notes, test taking, and other academic needs at the college level.
Possesses outstanding communication skills, both oral and written, including skill in writing memos/reports, Maintains knowledge and expertise in effective learning strategies, assessment tools, motivational techniques, and study skill development. Demonstrates ability to exercise sound judgment and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and according to FERPA guidelines. Works independently and follows through on duties with minimal direction, counsels and advises students with professional, academic, and/or personal questions and concerns, interacts with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds, and interacts collaboratively and effectively with other staff, student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and the Ohio State University community.
Provides on-going professional training to tutors in learning strategies for student-athletes when requested. Develops and maintains file resources related to study skills and learning strategies. Meets with prospective student athletes and families when requested. Serves as liaison to Student Life Disability Services and helps coordinate intake interviews, and follow-through with accommodations and services. Acts as resource for staff and coaches in the areas of learning development, learning strategies and identification of learning disabilities. Serves as an informal resource and mentor to assistant learning specialists as requested.
Maintains knowledge of regulations and laws associated with ADA and accommodations for individuals with learning disorders. Possesses outstanding listening, analytical, and problem-solving skills in work with academic staff and student-athletes. Determines priority of information and communicates effectively to colleagues. Possesses a strong attention to detail. Works collaboratively in situations that may be time-sensitive or otherwise highly pressured, with a variety of individuals including students, coaches, SASSO staff, undergraduate education personnel, and athletic staff. Ability to execute in a fast-paced environment while independently representing both the University and Athletics. Understands and operates under SASSO best practices to ensure academic integrity, transparent communication, and student-athlete success. A flexible schedule, including working evenings and weekends is required. Aids in SASSO initiatives and performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree and experience within the field of athletic academic support is required. Knowledge of effective learning strategies and academic development, specifically with students from diverse backgrounds, including different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Experience developing and motivating students for athletic and academic success.
Outstanding listening, communication, analytical, and problem solving skills. Familiarity with NCAA Rules, eligibility, academic advising, and Big Ten Conference Rules.
Desired Education/Experience:
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with time-sensitive responsibilities. Previous experience with a proven track record of success working with high profile and high-support need students. Master’s Degree in education, social work, or sport with specific experience in athletic learning support desired. Demonstrated teaching expertise, especially utilizing a wide range of pedagogical resources. Working knowledge of collegiate athletics and
student-athlete demands.
The targeted hiring range for this job profile is $50,000-$61,450 annually. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
