The Senior Philanthropy Advisor (
SPA
) is a member of the Philanthropy & Engagement Division focused on developing meaningful and personal relationships with existing and new donors to Hope College. The
SPA
leads and manages a portfolio of major gift prospects. The
SPA
reports to a Chief Philanthropy Officer (
CPO
) and collaborates with Division colleagues and campus stakeholders around student formation initiatives.
Campus stakeholders connected to student formation include: Vice President for Student Formation, Athletic Director, Associate Athletic Director, Athletics Liaison for Corporate Sponsorship, and Athletics Philanthropy Liaison. The
SPA
will facilitate monthly full team meetings that will also include the
CPO
, and lead the implementation of ongoing major gift fundraising.

A Senior Philanthropy Advisor is eager to communicate how donors can expand, sustain, and amplify that experience through generosity.
A Philanthropy Advisor provides portfolio leadership to a specific college priority or affinity area, increasing the pipeline and giving of major gift donors. A successful Philanthropy Advisor builds capacity by initiating, leading, and designing donor opportunities that leverage expertise and partnership with affinity/campus partners.
Responsibilities:
Major Gift Fundraising – 75%
Create and uphold a culture of generosity by leading with a spirit of servant leadership, emotional intelligence, strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment.
Lead and manage a portfolio of 75-125 prospects to increase pipeline productivity based on affinity fundraising priorities.
Build and lead an innovative 12 to 18-month fundraising plan “clear road map” that focuses on donor engagement and cultivation within affinity.
From discovery through stewardship, facilitate engagement experiences for prospects to deepen their investment and increase giving
Co-create gift opportunities within affinity priorities to achieve annual fundraising goals.
Ensure accurate and timely documentation of relationship management – call notes, relationship strategy steps, campus partners and pertinent documents – are recorded in the college’s
CRM
.
Adhere to college and division policies and philanthropy best practices around diversity, equity, inclusive excellence, privacy, integrity, honesty, and truthfulness to safeguard trust.
Affinity Relationships and Leadership – 15%
Serve as primary liaison between Philanthropy & Engagement and affinity area, working directly with the Vice President for Student Formation, Athletic Director, and other department-based fundraising leaders on affinity fundraising, focused on major gift projects and coordinating annual fund, sponsorships, and co-marketing opportunities
Facilitate buy-in/endorsement/input to comprehensive 12 to 18-month rolling fundraising plan
Develop key campus and community stakeholder relationships to build engagement and enhance cultivation
Mentor administrative leadership and faculty and staff in donor cultivation and stewardship of annual fund and major gifts
Develop and maintain a list of current and future funding priorities
Contribute to a positive and inclusive work community by building trusting partnerships across the college, continually learning, creating impactful experiences and working with a sense of responsibility for short-term and long-term outcomes.

Foster a divisional culture of philanthropy by
Communicating with divisional partners on overlapping engagement initiatives
Creating multi-pronged relationships with prospects through information sharing and teamwork with divisional partners
Inform divisional leadership about affinity priorities and opportunities to establish fundraising and engagement objectives.
Required Qualifications:
A minimum of 5-7 years of experience working in higher education or in the non-profit sector with progressive leadership in project management, recruitment or strategic systems design; 2 years specifically in fundraising or equivalent
Comfort and experience with building relationships from scratch and leading relationship development with existing donors
Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize and implement ongoing planning, project management, and improvement processes
Ability to participate in a dynamic, hybrid office team environment and build rapport, confidence, and trust with internal partners and external stakeholders
Some evening, weekend, and travel are required with a commitment from the division to create an environment for work-life balance
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree is strongly preferred
Proficiency of Microsoft Office suite applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and equivalent Google applications (Gmail, Drive, Slides, Sheets) and CRMs/Networked Information Systems (Raiser’s Edge)
Experience partnering effectively with team members in in-person and remote working environments
This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
