Sports Medicine Director / Assistant Athletic Director
Under the direction of the Athletic Director and in collaboration with other departmental employees, the Sports Medicine Director / Assistant Athletic Director will be responsible for managing and mitigating risk in athletic operations, event management, compliance, and supporting overall student-athlete success. The Sports Medicine Director/Assistant Athletic Director will provide leadership and actively contribute to Athletic Department operations through multifaceted contributions that include direct support and oversight, as well as recommendations and the implementation of new policies, procedures, programs, and services that lead to continual improvement. The ideal candidate should have knowledge of athletic operations and event management, compliance, athletic eligibility, student athlete support, and be able to efficiently manage multiple tasks simultaneously. The Sports Medicine Director/Assistant Athletic Director will be primarily responsible for a comprehensive Sports Medicine Program for the prevention of injuries to student athletes, overseeing medical care and rehabilitation for injuries through athletic training, and providing assistance to the Athletics Director in areas where needed or assigned.

• Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience working in or with an athletic program or a combination of relevant education and/or experience.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic and socio-economic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physiology of Exercise, or Adaptive Physical Education
• Certification by an organization recognized by the National Commission on Health Certifying Agencies and the American Medical Association
• Two years of athletic training experience, preferably at the collegiate level
• Practical field experience in the area of Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science and Athletic Training
• Possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
• CPR and First Aid certification (if not held, to be obtained within three months of hire)
• Master’s degree
• Community college experience in teaching, coaching, counseling or advising
• Compliance experience with regulations, bylaws, policies, and procedures
• Experience in game management process
• Experience in budget development
• Experience in Title IX compliance and investigations
• Experience in managing safety and minimizing liability
• Experience in collegiate-level student support services
The Sports Medicine Director / Assistant Athletic Director may be assigned and/or share responsibility for any of the following duties:
A. Sports Medicine Program (responsible for the following operations)
• primary responsibility for oversight and development of student-athlete sports medicine, training, and rehabilitation programs
• Prepares and implements written policies and procedures in collaboration with the team physician regarding emergency management, treatment, and reconditioning of injuries for athletes, including an annual review and update of established programs as necessary
• Oversees, directs, and schedules the day-to-day activities of the athletic training staff, including the recruitment, guidance, training, and evaluation of student athletic training interns in the performance of their duties
• Supervises, hires, and evaluates athletic training staff, including student workers
• Inspects and evaluates dressing rooms, showers, playing fields, and athletic equipment. collaborating with others as appropriate and necessary to reduce hazards
• Oversees and directs first aid and emergency medical care, including lifesaving procedures, to student athletes.
• In the absence of the team physician, makes decisions concerning the ability of the Injured athlete to participate
• Administers the use of rehabilitation equipment and operates related therapeutic modalities as directed by the team’s physician
• Substitutes, as needed in the absence of Trainers, for care of college athletic teams at home and away competition
• Assists the college physician and health personnel with athletic health screening examination arrangements
• Refers injured students to the team physician, college health center, or appropriate medical facility as necessary
• Supervises the maintenance of accurate and detailed injury and treatment reports about student athletes.
• Maintains treatment room equipment in a clean and orderly condition
• Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with student athletes, coaches, and health center personnel
• Prepares a budget for athletic first aid medical supplies and equipment for approval by the Director of Athletics
• Facilitates communication between athletes, coaches, parents, administration, and community concerning the health and physical status of athletes
• With the advice of the insurance agent, reviews athletic insurance coverage and assists student athletes and staff in the correct submission of insurance claims
B. Risk Management in Athletic Operations (assigned or shared with Athletic Director)
• Work with Facilities and coaching staff to coordinate student athlete travel compliance and safety.
• Work with Athletic Director and department staff to implement procedures and controls to minimize liability in athletic department operations.
• Coordinate department safety training and licensure as necessary
• Ensure departmental compliance with district policies and procedures and the regulations an bylaws of 3C2A, NCAA, NIRA, Golden Valley Conference, and other governing bodies
• Work with Athletic Director and Title IX officer for compliance
• Ensure safe and effective operations of the Athletic Department
• Serve as Administrator in Charge as assigned by the Athletic Director
C. Game Management (assigned or shared with Athletic Director)
• Coordinate all home athletic events, including the preparation of facilities, equipment, officials, athletic trainers, and game personnel (announcers, timers, public address, ticket sellers, security, emergency personnel, concessions, etc.).
• Be the site supervisor when designated at FRC athletic contests; provide direction to event and coaching staff, athletes, spectators, etc. to ensure smooth operations and the safety of participants.
• Oversee cash flow and reporting of home contests
• Coordinate the hiring, training and supervision of all event and facility staff, interns and student workers;
D. Athletic Department Operations (assigned or shared with Athletic Director)
• Work with Athletics Director and the facilities department to direct facility scheduling for events and practices and other uses as appropriate.
• May participate in the selection, supervision and evaluation of athletic coaches and support staff.
• Attend regular meetings and training to promote strict adherence to conference and state athletic rules, regulations and codes.
• Attend events at off-campus sites and events scheduled for days, evenings or weekends.
• Oversight and accountability for assigned budget accounts.
• Contribute to the campus at large through participation in committees, events, activities, etc.
E. Student-Athlete Support (assigned or shared with Athletic Director)
• Provide support for student-athletes in pursuit of their educational and athletic goals
• Integrate the role of intercollegiate athletics with the District’s mission by maintaining academically and ethically sound programs.
• Direct orientation, eligibility, student engagement, policies, procedures, Name Image and Likeness (NIL) compliance
• Assist student-athletes with student insurance claims and reports
• Coordinate and support with Student Services departments such as Student Activities, Advising, Financial Aid, and other campus operations to provide an overall educational experience for student-athletes
• In conjunction with Student Services departments, coordinate ongoing student-athlete orientation training and programs throughout the year for topics such as: alcohol/drug awareness, sexual assault awareness, mental health, social media profiles and posting, self-marketing as a student-athlete, and healthy interpersonal relationships.
• Coordinate and support departmental events such as transfer signings, student leadership, and student-athlete recognition.
F. Perform related duties as assigned.
