Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion, the Graduate Assistant of Sports Performance is responsible for the planning and organizing of workout programs for assigned Club Sports teams. Vital to the position is the ability to work with athletes of various backgrounds and focus, from those being elite, highly trained athletes, to those just starting to pursue strength & conditioning. The person will be highly organized, detailed in regard to planning and oversight of teams and programs, and have a strong sense of purpose both in regard to facility cleaning and maintenance, and running teams through their workouts. This person reports to the Director of Sports Performance.
Create strength & conditioning programs for assigned club sport teams (will differ depending on team, coach, etc) during in season and off season workouts. Work with coaches to build programs suitable for their individual teams and sports. Assist in the management of assigned Strength Training facility: monitor & maintain safety and cleanliness. Supervise and Coach team during workouts ensuring the safety and progression of each athlete. Supervise and Coach open gym workouts ensuring the safety and progression of each athlete. Working to create nutritional plans for individual athletes upon request. Collaborating with Athletic trainers regarding functional testing, athletic injuries and return to play. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission. Actively seeking new areas for research study and coordinating with director to assist in implementation of academic integration. Travels with specific teams when deemed necessary
Supervises: Work Study, Student Workers, and Interns
Four-year college degree, with a concentration in Exercise science with a specialty in fitness. Strong movement and weight lifting experience required. Well-developed communications skills. CSCS certification mandatory. Current in First Aid and CPR certification. Willing to complete higher education.
Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well articulated information.
Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business and community customers and associates.
Strong organizational skills.
Excellent computer skills.
Occasionally required to travel to local and campus locations.
Frequently required to sit for extended periods to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard. (If not administrative duties, such as labor, define general physical abilities.
Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.
Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
Regularly lift 50-200 or fewer pounds, demonstrating techniques and lifts.
The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled office setting. It is well lighted and the noise level is moderate. Outdoor training when weather permits.
Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
