The USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is seeking applications for a clinical sports pharmacy specialist, (Sports Pharmacist), to provide medication expertise and evaluate drug safety for athletes through on-site support for the Athletic Department to enhance the premier health and well-being program for student-athletes.
The Sports Pharmacist will embed into an interprofessional team-based medical model of healthcare services to provide invaluable medication expertise to patient athletes and interprofessional team members, work in partnership with the established outpatient pharmacy services, and consult with students with a balanced approach to preserve health and performance. The Sports Pharmacist will also provide didactic and experiential training to student and registered pharmacist learners. The staff pharmacist hired for this position would fill the gap of much needed IPPE and APPE rotations in the inpatient clinical setting while also meeting needs for IPE training throughout the Pharm.D. curriculum.
The sports pharmacy program at the University of Southern California (USC) provides didactic education and intentional training for learners from both PharmD and post-graduate academic certificate learners from USC Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Of the 14 schools of pharmacy in California, USC Mann is the first to establish the model sports pharmacy program in which an advanced practice Sports Pharmacist is establishing protocols and policies and procedures for this practice setting. The USC Mann sports pharmacy program also aims to prepare the pharmacy workforce for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic games.

Apply NowThe Sports Pharmacist will work collaboratively with other pharmacists from USC Pharmacies and faculty from USC Mann to create a premier sports pharmacy educational program with the goal of being recognized as an international hub for the specialty practice of clinical sports pharmacy and innovation.
This position also aligns with several critical priorities: (1) The service is highly valued by USC top level leadership who desires more medical and pharmacy integration with USC Athletics; (2) the service is desired by the current interprofessional team serving USC athletes, and (3) the program provides an abundance of scholarly opportunities in teaching, practice-based research, interprofessional education, etc.
Qualifications
a. Education
i. Graduate of an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy
ii. Licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of California
iii. Completion of annual anti-doping training, including Drug Free Sport International, USADA HealthPro Advantage, and World Anti-Doping Agency ADEL programs.
Preference given to a PharmD who:
additionally holds bachelor’s degree in Human Performance, Exercise Physiology, Sports Science, or a related field completed of the International Olympic Committee Drugs in Sport Certificate Program.
b. Experience
This position requires 2+ years of related clinical experience working with athletes in a direct patient care setting.
Preference given to a PharmD who has:
knowledge of contemporary sports pharmacy practice significant experience or expertise in advanced sports pharmacy practice, drugs safety in sport/exercise, drug status in sport and doping deterrence experience giving presentations and teaching.
The hourly rate range for this position is $67.00 - $75.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree
Minimum Experience: 1 year
Minimum Field of Expertise: Degree from accredited (ACPE) school of pharmacy. Registered pharmacist in state of California. Hospital pharmacy experience. Familiarity with unit dose, IV admixtures and clinical pharmacy practice.
