About the Position:
This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
This position is responsible for monitoring, evaluating and managing the day-to-day operations of the sports turf technicians for all athletic fields. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting in developing, implementing, and maintaining field management calendars, fertilization, cultural practices, mowing, irrigation, field painting and preparation for athletic contests, game day set up for Ford Football Stadium, Armstrong Indoor practice Field, Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium, Pettus Practice Field, track throwing field, and Intramural Field. Assisting on inventory and ordering all athletics department field paint, fertilizer, and other related chemicals.
Essential Functions:
Monitor, evaluate and manage the day-to-day operations of all athletics fields. Ensure daily agenda communicated by Sports Field Manager is carried out. Responsible for inventory and ordering of tools, supplies and equipment.
Supervision and work with field management crew. Oversee the daily rounds, routines and preventive management program. Cultural practices: including, but not limited to; Aerifying, Verticutting, Topdressing, Uniraking, Sweeping/grooming synthetic fields, boom and backpack spraying (fertilizer, herbicide, insecticide, fungicide), granular broadcast applications, Over seeding, Air2G2, and re-sodding.
Assist with game day preparation and management by consistent field management and manicuring: including, but not limited to; use of string line trimmer, edger, and blower; use zero turn mower, push mower and fairway reel mowersgrooming/sweeping synthetic turf.
Perform inspections of all athletic fields by: hand watering localized dry spots when necessary and trash/debris removal.
Field painting: including, but not limited to; mixing paint, preparing painter and cleaning afterwards, running string linespainting a variety of athletic fields on natural grass, assist and potentially carry-out painting game fields and logos.
Irrigation work: including, but not limited to, removing, replacing, adjusting irrigation heads, comprehensive knowledge of irrigation controllers, and complete irrigation audits.
Manage IWMS/CMMS by opening, documenting and closing work orders. Other duties as assigned.
Due to Athletic schedules this position may work irregular hours. Must be available to work some weekends/holidays, as well as some soccer matches and all home football games.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
A High school diploma (or equivalent) is required. Associates with 2-5 years of work experience or Bachelor's degree or 7 yrs technical field experience with 1 year of supervisory experience in sports field or golf course industry required. An Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in turf grass science or horticulture is preferred.
A minimum of seven (7) years of experience is required. Considerable experience in the operation and management of athletic field facilities required. Experience at the collegiate and/or professional level is preferred.
Must posses current TX driver's license and clear driving record. TDA,CPTM, CSTM is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.
Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
Candidate knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, equipment and tools used in the management of athletic fields is required. Knowledge of the hazards and necessary safety precautions in general labor and management work is also required.
Candidate skill in demonstrating and teaching proper use and care of tools and equipment in grounds works is essential. Basic reel mower maintenance is preferred.
Candidate ability to plan, layout and supervise the work of unskilled and semi-skilled workers required.
Candidate familiarity with the extensive use of sports field equipment, including but not limited to: Mowers (reel and rotary), tractor, boom sprayer, skid steer, top dressers, Unirake, sweepers (both natural grass and synthetic turf types), synthetic field groomer, turbine blower, Air2G2, different types of drag mats is required.
Candidate knowledge of Bermuda grass is a plus.
Candidate familiarity with irrigation systems is preferred.
Candidate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel is essential.
Candidate must possess the ability to manage Integrated Workplace Management Systems (IWMS/CMMS).
Candidate must be able to work outdoors year round.
