Overview

Northern Illinois University (NIU) Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) seeks qualified candidates to fill two 12-month Staff Counselor positions. CCS is part of the Division of Student Affairs and contributes to the mission to support the academic and personal success of NIU students as we promote their welfare and persistence through the college experience in preparation for their lives after graduation. ABOUT CCS AND THE DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRSCCS is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS) and we offer an APA-accredited doctoral internship program with three internship positions. We also offer a practicum training program for 3-5 students each year. CCS staff embrace all aspects of diversity and promote awareness, sensitivity, cultural competence, and advocacy across all services as well as in our work with campus and community partners. Position Summary

This CCS Staff Psychologist/Counselor position will provide embedded mental health services within NIU Athletics while also providing services at CCS. The position is structured to provide the equivalent of four days of services per week (30 hours) to student-athletes under the direct supervision of the Director of Athletics Counseling. The position includes the equivalent of one day per week (7.5 hours) at CCS for the provision of services to the general student population, the NIU community, and the CCS training program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provides Clinical Services Provide mental health services focused on the psychological and personal development of student-athletes. This will include initial consultations, individual therapy, and crisis intervention support. After working hours, CCS on-call support will continue to be the designated mental health emergency service available to student-athletes and Athletics staff. CCS Responsibilites Initial consultations and crisis intervention to the general student population. Mental health consultation and outreach to the campus community. Supervision and training graduate-level trainees. Other duties as assigned. Completion of Clinical RecordsCompletion of clinical documentation in a timely and ethical manner. Provides Consultation Services Provide mental health consultation for coaches, administration, and sports medicine professionals. Coordinates Services Coordinates services between Athletics and CCS, particularly at times when student-athletes need more immediate and available mental health support. Provides Outreach Services Provide outreach programming and presentations to specific teams, the general student-athlete population, and Athletics staff on mental health-related topics.

Minimum Required Qualifications (SPS)

Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology for Staff Psychologists OR master’s degree in counseling, Social Work, or related field for Staff Counselor. Licensed in the field or eligible for licensure within 18 months of hire. Demonstrated experience and skills in providing mental health services to student-athletes. Demonstrated experience and skills in providing mental services to diverse clients with diverse concerns. Previous experience providing supervision to graduate-level trainees and doctoral interns.

Additional Requirements (SPS)

Previous experience in a university counseling center. Certification by the Association for Applied Sport Psychology Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
