Student Assistant - Director of Purple Haze (Athletics)

SUMMARY

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director of the Purple Haze is the student leader responsible for building, managing, and growing the Purple Haze into the premier student organization supporting SFA Athletics. This position serves as the primary connection between SFA Athletics and the student body, creating an energetic, inclusive, and passionate student culture around Lumberjack Athletics.

The Director leads the Purple Haze executive board, organizes student engagement initiatives, promotes athletic events, develops traditions, and works directly with SFA Athletics staff to make the student experience at SFA games bigger, louder, and more connected.

QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.

No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.

The ideal Director is a passionate, outgoing, organized, and creative SFA student who understands what motivates their peers. They should be comfortable taking initiative, speaking in front of groups, creating excitement, and turning ideas into actual events and traditions. Previous leadership, marketing, social media, event planning, or athletics experience is preferred but not required. The most important qualification is a genuine desire to make SFA Athletics a better experience for students

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Leads the day-to-day operations of the Purple Haze.
2. Recruits, organizes, and motivates students to attend SFA athletic events.
3. Establishes and maintains Purple Haze traditions, chants, themes, and gameday experiences.
4. Serves as the primary student representative for the Purple Haze.
5. Builds a strong sense of community and identity among members.
6. Works with SFA Athletics staff to develop student-focused gameday experiences.
7. Coordinates student arrivals, promotions, giveaways, contests, and special activities.
8. Helps create an energetic and organized student section at home games.
9. Encourages attendance across multiple SFA sports—not just football or basketball.
10. Develops creative ways to increase student participation throughout the season. Marketing & Social Media
11. Assists in developing Purple Haze social media content and campaigns.
12. Promotes upcoming games, student events, giveaways, and initiatives
13. Helps establish a recognizable voice and identity for the Purple Haze.
14. Utilizes campus organizations, residence halls, student groups, and word-of-mouth marketing to drive participation. Executive Board Leadership
15. Recruits and oversees a Purple Haze Executive Board.
16. Delegates responsibilities across areas such as marketing, gameday operations, recruitment, traditions, and community engagement.
17. Holds regular meetings and establish goals for the organization.
18. Creates opportunities for other students to take leadership roles within the Purple Haze.
19. Builds relationships with student organizations and campus departments.
20. Collaborates with Greek organizations, residence halls, student clubs, and other campus groups.
21. Represents the Purple Haze at campus events and student activities.
22. Identifies opportunities to make Purple Haze a recognizable part of the overall SFA student experience.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. Knowledge of general office and clerical procedures and concepts.
2. Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and files.
3. Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
4. Ability to understand and follow instructions.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.

Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
