Position Summary Information
This position directly engages students on a daily basis, supporting the integration of Life Design methodology, coaching pedagogy and learning science, in support of students’ academic and career journeys. Located in the university’s Center for Career and Academic Progress, this professional reports to the assistant vice president for career and academic progress. This role supports programming and student engagement in both programs within the Office of Career Education and Development including career support, and student academic success coaching. This professional also oversees a sizable and growing career and academic development program, in partnership with our athletics teams called Rock Career Champions. Provides career coaching services to students, including training on various career-related topics such as resumes, cover letters, interview skills, graduate school applications, distinguished scholarship applications and job search strategies.Works with students on career and life planning through the integrated Life Design process; supports students in the Rock Career Champions program, working directly with multiple coaches and athletic teams, and encouraging progression in the program on both career and academic development.Independently develops relationships with athletics’ staff and coaches, promoting and expanding the Rock Career Champions program to additional varsity sports.Develops assessments and uses validated instruments such as the Learning and Studies Strategies Inventory (LASSI), to measure the impact of Rock Career Champions on GPA, persistence, thriving, academic motivation, use of resources, self-testing and other key metrics.Serves as key oversight and content expert for all Life Design classroom assignments and works to evolve the way that The Center for Career and Academic Progress (The Center) applies Life Design methodology.Facilitates the application of Life Design across majors by working independently with multiple chairpersons; develops assessments, measuring learning and persistence impact of Life Design and evaluates results.Works with professional staff, para-professionals and pre-professionals to manage a caseload of over 1000 life design assignments each fall.Supports career readiness through classroom presentations, on-campus programming and workshops.Maintains career coaching notes on all student appointments in the office’s career management system in a manner consistent with office policy.Works proficiently with cloud-based career development tools for job and internship searching, labor market analysis (LightCast) , interview learning, career assessments and major and career exploration.Supports the liaison structure of the office, by liaising, independently, with 12 different academic departments (visiting department meetings, assessing needs, conveying career programming and helping departments solve career and academic related student challenges).Assists the associate director and director/AVP with academic, major-specific programming and both campus and employer relations/development.Performs maintenance, create events and maintain appointment schedule in career management system (Handshake/administrative).Supports the associate director of the career office, working with employers, securing interview rooms, welcoming employer representatives to interview days and other on-campus recruitment efforts. Maintains a sizable caseload as a Success Coach, working with all populations of students on cognition, metacognition, learning science, priority management, research-proven study and test prep methodology, goal setting, academic motivation and academic-related anxiety.Serves as part of the external, outreach coaching team, interacting with various high school counselors, developing and presenting programs for junior and senior high school students – on site in the high school – on college prep; this also serves as a recruitment function, and fulfills The Center’s mission which includes contributing to the overall Enrollment Management Division.Oversees a contingent of Peer Academic Coaches (PACs), and The Center’s digital and social media student assistant; managing the annual social media structure and marketing plan.Attends weekly staff meetings and contributes to shared staff learning.
Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited college or university.One year of professional experience in a career development or academic coaching office.One year of experience leading academic and career coaching with scholarship athletes.
Masters degree in education, student affairs, counseling or school counseling.Formal training in academic coaching pedagogy from Inside Track (or similar).Formal training in Stanford Life Design methodology, or at least one year of experience in applying Life Design methodology.3 or more years of professional work experience in a teaching and learning setting.
