Position Summary Information
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Success, the Success Coach – Athletics Specialist will work in a highly collaborative environment to provide holistic academic support services to all student athletes. The Success Coach – Athletics Specialist will in close collaboration with the staff and coaches in Athletics as well as faculty and staff across the university to support further student athlete success.
The Success Coach – Athletics Specialist is responsible for modeling the University Mission through dedicated job performance, service excellence to constituencies, respectful collaboration, and active support of the University’s Mission in Catholic and Lasallian higher education. Other major responsibilities include the following:Relationship Building & Academic Coaching-Actively reach out and meet with student athletes to build and maintain meaningful connections and positive relationships for the duration of their Lewis experience.-Provide a welcoming space where student athletes can openly discuss barriers to academic progress and connect to appropriate campus resources with care.-Offer learning strategies and information on relevant resources to support students’ academic goals and guide student athletes in developing positive relationships with faculty.- Provide student athletes with opportunities to reflect on past learning experiences, determine academic goals and develop effective study and time management skills. Guidance on Co-Curricular Experiences-Stay up-to-date on, actively seek out information on and communicate with student athletes about co-curricular experiences (experiential learning, civic engagement, study abroad, community-engaged learning, research, internships, student activities, etc.) relevant to their majors/minors. Academic Progress & Retention Intervention- Oversee the establishment of all continuing eligibility certifications for student-athletes, in accordance with NCAA and conference regulations, bylaws, and procedural requirements and enter relevant data into the NCAA Compliance Assistant (CA).-Maintain proactive and open communication with coaches and Athletics training staff regarding academic progress of student athletes.-Utilize technology to review and monitor student athletes for various alerts and take action on an ongoing basis.-Provide academic support for student athletes on academic probation.-Participate in proactive retention programming and campaigns each semester. Vocation Exploration & Career Development-Help student athletes understand and apply the concept of vocation in interactions and conversations.-Listen intently to students, guide them in their search for meaning and purpose and offer opportunities for reflection.-Promote and encourage students to take advantage of events and experiences related to vocation exploration. Course Selection & Academic Advising-Advise freshmen and first semester sophomores on course selection and ensure all students in assigned case load (undecided student athletes) are registered prior to each term.-Understand and stay up to date with degree requirements, course sequencing, and other nuances of majors by working in close collaboration with Faculty Mentors and department chairs.- Assist student athletes with considering and declaring minors, additional majors and major changes referring students to faculty mentors, academic departments and university offices as appropriate.-Assist students in understanding college policies, academic requirements, academic appeals, NCAA eligibility requirements and other processes that might affect progress through their academic program of study and/or their NCAA eligibility. Committees & Misc. Additional Responsibilities-Serve as a member of the NCAA Certification and Eligibility Committee, the Intercollegiate Athletic Advisory Committee and other committees related to the student athlete experience at Lewis.-Meet with prospective student-athletes and families to showcase the student-athlete experience, educational opportunities, and university and NCAA policies and requirements.-Meet with athletic teams and Athletics Department Staff periodically to connect and share information.-Provide ongoing training to staff regarding NCAA eligibility and Compliance Assistant.Perform other duties as assigned to advance the mission and objectives of the university.Perform other duties as assigned to advance the mission and objective of the university.
Bachelor’s degree required with 3+ years of experience in higher education working with students in advising, recruitment and/or retention activities. Experience and knowledge of NCAA eligibility requirements and experience working with student athletes at the college level. Also required are excellent written and verbal communication and problem solving skills. Strong organizational skills with a focus on accurate and thorough documentation of student interactions. Understanding of professional boundaries and importance of confidentiality. Appreciation for, and interest in serving a diverse university population. Ability to work a flexible schedule with some evening and weekend hours. Experience using video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, Teams, or Webex.
Master’s degree in Education, Higher Education, Student Personnel, or related field. Knowledge of Banner, DegreeWorks, and/or Office 365 a plus.
