Job Summary: The Superintendent, Campus Grounds and Athletic Fields manages and oversees the associated grounds and fields for a 300+ acre campus for the University and is responsible for the care and maintenance of all plant materials in the University landscape and turf on the University athletic fields. Provides supervision, training and assignments to laborers. Uses independent judgement and initiative.
Duties and Responsibilities: Manages the daily operations of the landscaping and athletic staff to include horticultural operations, turf maintenance, insect, disease, weed control, and related operations. Establishes and enforces operating procedures and work standards that will ensure adequate performance and personnel safety. Plans, schedules, assigns, and directs planting, cultivating, propagating, and care of turf, trees, shrubs, and flowers. Supervises the removal of leaves, grass, dirt, and rubbish from grounds. Maintains inventory supplies of tools, equipment, or materials to ensure that sufficient supplies are available and items are in usable condition. Actively promotes and enforces safety in areas of responsibility. Plans job sites for installation of landscaping. Develops and recommends policies and procedures designed to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of operations and address all grounds keeping needs of the University. Plans and coordinates an integrated pest management program including the application of fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and the implementation of cultural and physical practices that reduce the impact of plant pests. Maintains accurate records of licensing, training, pest control applications, MSDA and pesticide labeling in accordance with state and federal regulations. Mixes and applies pesticides and fertilizers. Oversees maintenance and repair of landscaping equipment and vehicles. Programs, troubleshoots, and repairs irrigation systems. Oversees University trash disposal service. Updates the Assistant Director, Physical Plant, of work progress, answers questions, and ensures that plans and duties are carried out in a safe, productive, and professional manner. Drives a University vehicle and moves from building to building on campus. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. Seven (7) years of full-time supervisory experience in landscaping/ground care OR an Associate degree or greater in one of the following areas: Horticulture, Agronomy and other agriculture related fields plus three years full-time of supervisory experience required. Commercial Pesticide/Herbicide License is required within 120 days of accepting the position. Valid driver’s license required.
