The Technical Operations Manager for Production & Sports Complex oversees and manages all technical production, advanced programming and maintenance, and athletic support areas of Technical Operations for Event & Conference Services. This position is responsible for the creation, design, and integration of systems for major events that include lighting, audio, video, and supporting systems. These events include, but are not limited to, athletic events, small to large-sized concerts, meetings, conferences, commencements, convocations, speaking events, and other special events as scheduled that take place across campus and in the Towson Sports Complex. This complex includes SECU Arena, Unitas Stadium, South Campus Pavilion, and other associated spaces. This position works directly with clients and visiting vendors on specific technical needs for events, as well as designing, programming, and maintaining digital display boards in the Sports Complex area, both university and non-university related.
Working with the Senior Technical Operations Manager, this position assists in overseeing the Technical Operations staff to coordinate the setup, operation, and load out of event-related audio/visual equipment throughout the Event & Conference Services (ECS) supported venues on Towson University’s campus. As a front-line employee, this position directly interacts with ECS clients and thus is one of the key staff members responsible for assuring exceptional customer service. This position's performance is critical to the success of events coordinated through the ECS department.
Responsibilities and Duties
The Technical Operations Manager for Production & Sports Complex must be able to work with Event Managers, clients, and production companies to interpret audio/visual needs for small to large sized events across all supported campus venues, particularly at the Towson University Sports Complex. Must have the capability to understand technical requirements detailed on work orders and use independent judgement to determine the best equipment to do the job. The position must accurately interpret client tech needs and produce a high-quality product. Must be "up-to-date" on current technology and programming, troubleshooting, and maintenance of in-house technical equipment. This position will work directly with the President’s Office, Intercollegiate Athletics staff, Towson’s Office of Technology Services, other university departments, and external vendors, including athletic and video production.
This position must also demonstrate a strong commitment to providing exceptional customer service. On larger events, this position serves as a point of contact for visiting production crews as needed. The Technical Operations Manager for Production & Sports Complex must be skilled in set up, operation, and breakdown of our most complex audio/visual equipment set ups, including ETC lighting consoles, Midas audio consoles, Tricaster video systems, and Daktronics display and scoring equipment. Must be capable of reacting quickly to situations in case of equipment failure or last-minute requests for services. This position may deliver event-related audio/visual equipment to various locations on campus using authorized university vehicles. SECU Arena and Unitas Stadium: Operation, programming, and maintenance of the digital display boards, video production systems, audio systems, Daktronics control and scoring systems, production TV truck tie-in, rigging within allowable boundaries, and load-in/load-out procedures for all events in order to protect all University facilities. Ensure emergency announcement and procedures are in place in the case of severe weather. Must be knowledgeable of ECS and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) standards and meet with the other staff members weekly to review the upcoming week’s events to effectively plan and schedule staff and inventory. Additionally, must be knowledgeable of audio standards to maintain good neighbor relationships.
During certain events, this position supervises student/on-call/full-time senior event technicians during events. Responsibilities include ongoing training of staff and ensuring proper safety measures are in place and followed. Provide feedback to the Senior Technical Operations Manager concerning performance of student/on-call senior event technician employees.

Assist in the administrative processes of inputting technical work orders, creating estimates of expense, coordinating equipment repair and upgrades, and coordinating closed captioning for all ECS events as needed to adhere to campus ADA compliance. Assist in equipment inventory control, conduct routine tours of ECS supported facilities. As part of routine duties, organize storage rooms and inspect condition of audio/visual equipment, reporting equipment in need of repair to proper personnel. Make minor repairs to equipment as necessary to ensure proper operation and safety standards.
The position must demonstrate a strong commitment to providing exceptional guest services and meeting clients’ needs. Carry out the general duties associated with the position in order to maintain efficient and effective realization of departmental goals and assist with the successful execution of events. Research, manage, and coordinate rental or procurement of technical equipment for large or special events. Perform other duties as assigned.
